The Moselle makes its way from the Vosges Mountains in north-eastern France to where it flows into the Rhine. And you are right in the middle of it – on a section between Nancy and Trier! On our journey along the Moselle cycle path, you start in the heart of Lorraine. You first follow the French Moselle along the Moselle Canal. Via Pont-à-Mousson, you will reach Metz on the Moselle cycle path in Lorraine, which will impress you with its beautiful Gothic cathedral, a wealth of sublime buildings and museums. The route continues via Thionville to the border triangle of Germany, France and Luxembourg. At Perl you reach the German Moselle. As far as Trier, you follow the Moselle Valley, which is lined with vineyards and was already inhabited in Roman times. It was also the Romans who cultivated wine here. To this day, the region along the Moselle produces excellent and nationally renowned wines – taste and enjoy! In Trier, you have the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of the Romans: Numerous buildings such as the Porta Nigra and the Imperial Baths will take you back to ancient times. On our trip on the Moselle cycle path in Lorraine, you will get to know a lesser-known section of the Moselle in France, discover both small and large historic towns and enjoy German and French culture at the same time.

Day 1: Individual arrival in Nancy

Your journey along the Moselle cycle path in Lorraine begins in the vibrant city of Nancy. Once the capital of the Dukes of Lorraine, Nancy boasts a stunning blend of architectural styles, ranging from medieval structures to magnificent Art Nouveau landmarks. The highlight of the city is the Place Stanislas, a neoclassical square renowned as one of the most beautiful in Europe.

Nancy is also known for its culinary delights—don’t miss the golden bergamot sweets or the colorful, rainbow-hued macarons, both local specialties that are as sweet as they are delicious. Day 2: Nancy – Pont-à-Mousson, approx. 40 km

Today's stage of the Moselle cycle path in Lorraine begins with a peaceful ride along the Meurthe River. As you reach Custines, you'll join the Moselle, following its winding meanders towards the charming town of Pont-à-Mousson. The town's name is derived from one of the few bridges that spanned the Moselle in medieval times.

In the Middle Ages, the Moselle was strategically controlled by a castle located just outside the town, though only its ruins remain today. Take a scenic walk up the hill here you'll be treated to panoramic views of the town and the picturesque Moselle Valley below.

Known for its rich history, Metz boasts an impressive array of historical buildings, squares, and churches. The most striking landmark is the Saint-Étienne Cathedral, one of the largest and most beautiful cathedrals in France. Its vast stained-glass windows, covering over 6,000 square meters, are a breathtaking sight and a true testament to the city's architectural grandeur.

Metz is also famous for its culinary specialty: the mirabelle plum. Whether in cakes, jams, or spirits, this sweet, golden fruit is a local delight that you won’t want to miss. Enjoy the city's flavors as you take in its stunning historical sights.

Today's cycle along the Moselle towards Thionville is a smooth ride, with no significant climbs. On the way, consider a detour to Uckange, where a visit to the Parc du Haute-Fourneau offers a fascinating glimpse into the region's industrial past. This former iron and steelworks is now a museum, showcasing the history of Lorraine’s once-thriving iron and steel production.

Upon reaching Thionville, take the time for an extended walk through the town. Stroll past the impressive St. Maximin Church, the Tour aux Puces Museum, and the Belfry, a 14th-century watchtower that offers a glimpse into the town's medieval heritage. Thionville's rich history and charming streets make for a perfect end to your day's journey.
