The Moselle-Rhine Cycle Route

Welcome to your journey along the Moselle-Rhine Cycle Route! You start in Trier, the oldest city in Germany. Follow in the footsteps of the Romans, who founded the city over 2000 years ago. Be it Trier's landmark, the Porta Nigra, the amphitheatre or the Barbara Baths – Trier's ancient history is still visible in many places in the city today. But modern buildings and squares also lend Trier its special charm. How about a visit to Trier Cathedral, the Karl Marx House or a stroll through the palace gardens of the Electoral Palace? As you can see, it's worth arriving early!

The traces of the Romans will continue to accompany you on the first stage of your journey on the Moselle-Rhine Cycle Route. Visit the Villa Rustica in Mehring and treat yourself to a Riesling from the well-known Apotheke vineyard in the wine village of Trittenheim. Wine also plays or played an important role in Neumagen-Dhron. The Neumagen wine ship in the town center represents a tomb, which suggests that Moselle wine was already being transported in ancient times. Piesport is the largest wine-growing community on the Moselle. Mülheim, idyllically situated in the middle of vineyards, is in no way inferior. You can spend the night in Trittenheim, Piesport or Mülheim.

Follow the Moselle at a leisurely pace and reach Bernkastel-Kues, one of the most picturesque towns on the Moselle. Situated at the foot of vineyards, the small town presents itself with centuries-old half-timbered houses, cobbled alleyways and cozy wine taverns. Landshut Castle towers above the town, from whose keep you have a wonderful view of the Moselle valley. Continue through the Kröver Nacktarsch wine-growing region to Traben-Trarbach. If you like, take a boat trip (not included) and enjoy the unique view of the vineyards and the town from the water.

Accompanied by numerous vineyards, you follow the meanders of the Moselle and reach the Moselle loop Zeller Hamm on the third stage of your journey on the Moselle-Rhine Cycle Route, on whose hill you will find the former Marienburg monastery. You cycle through Zell, whose vineyard Schwarze Katz produces excellent wines, pass the steepest vineyard in Europe near Bremm and discover the ruins of Metternich Castle near Beilstein. The next castle will catch your eye from afar: the Cochem Reichsburg, which is around 1000 years old. Today you will spend the night in Cochem or Treis-Karden. The townscape of the wine village of Treis-Karden is dominated by the Mosel Cathedral, one of the most impressive churches on the Moselle.

And your journey on the Moselle-Rhine Cycle Route continues. Another highlight awaits you a little away from the Moselle: Eltz Castle. With its towers and oriels, it is one of the most beautiful castles in Germany. Back on the Moselle Cycle Route, you head to Koblenz. Like many places in the region, the city on the German Corner, where the Moselle and Rhine meet, looks back on a long and eventful history. Explore Koblenz's old town on a walk or take a cable car ride to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress.

For the next two days of cycling, you will be on the Rhine. From Koblenz, follow it southwards. Halfway along the Rhine Cycle Path, you will reach the small town of Boppard without any inclines. The town, which is also characterized by winegrowing, lies on the largest bend in the Rhine. The route continues to St. Goar. The Loreley is located on the opposite side of the Rhine. The rock became famous through the legend of the beautiful maiden Loreley. She is said to have lured the Rhine boatmen to their doom with her singing. Above St. Goar are the ruins of Rheinfels Castle, the largest castle and fortress complex on the Middle Rhine.

The last stage of your journey on the Moselle-Rhine Cycle Route takes you swiftly towards your destination. With the Hunsrück on your right and the Taunus on your left, you cycle to Mainz not far from the Rhine with virtually no inclines. The state capital of Rhineland-Palatinate was already inhabited in Roman times. Particularly worth seeing is the six-towered St. Martin's Cathedral, which is one of the highlights of Romanesque church architecture on the Rhine alongside the cathedrals of Speyer and Worms. Opposite the cathedral is the Gutenberg Museum. The world's only museum of printing art provides an insight into the printing technology with movable type invented by the city's most famous son, Johannes Gutenberg.

After breakfast, your journey on the Moselle-Rhine Cycle Route ends. We are happy to extend your stay in Trier, Koblenz or Mainz with an extra night.
