Following the coast of Lake IJssel, your journey takes you first to the harbour town of Stavoren, once the bustling home port of Frisian kings and sailors. A few kilometres further north, Hindeloopen offers a perfect spot for a stopover. Its many attractions, distinctive house gables, and charming wooden bridges all stand as reminders of the town’s former glory as a thriving trading hub. Your overnight stay in Makkum is equally captivating. Here, be sure to visit the Koninklijke Tichelaar, the oldest earthenware factory in the Netherlands, which has been crafting fine pottery since 1640.
From Makkum, you will cycle along the shores of Lake IJssel for a while today. On your left, the 32-kilometre-long Afsluitdijk stretches out, separating Lake IJssel from the Wadden Sea. Your destination, the historic harbour town of Harlingen, is especially notable for its impressive collection of over 600 monuments. With its charming old houses, characteristic canals, and bustling harbours, it is no wonder the town is so captivating. What would a cycle tour in Friesland be without a visit to the Wadden Islands? The next stop is island hopping to the car-free island of Vlieland. It is, easily accessible by ferry from Harlingen and features almost 26 kilometres of cycle paths inviting you to explore the smallest of the West Frisian islands at your own pace. The landscape is a picture of tranquility, with towering dunes, expansive sandy beaches, and small wooded areas. Pay a visits to the island's only village, Oost-Vlieland, and the Tromp's Huys. The oldest house on Vlieland now serves as a museum, offering insights into the island's fascinating history. For stunning views, climb the Vuurboetsduin, a 40-metre-high wooded dune topped with a lighthouse.
Experience the serene tranquillity of another West Frisian Wadden island. As you disembark the ferry, the first sight that will catch your eye is the majestic Brandaris lighthouse, standing proudly in the harbour town of West-Terschelling. The island boasts a 30-kilometre-long, up to 500-metre-wide sandy beach, easily accessible by bike. Whether you’re relaxing in the sun, listening to the soothing sounds of the sea, or enjoying stunning views of the North Sea, the beach offers an idyllic retreat. For those seeking a more active experience, a mudflat hike is highly recommended—just be sure to wear sturdy footwear! With a bit of luck, you may even spot a group of sunbathing seals on one of the sandbanks.
Today, you bid farewell to the sea as you venture a few kilometres inland to reach Franeker. Here, on Eise Eisingastraat, named after the amateur astronomer, you will find the oldest functioning planetarium in the world. Continuing your journey, you will arrive in the village of Hogebeintum, where you’ll stand atop the highest terp in the Netherlands, nearly nine metres above sea level. Your final destination for the day is the fortified town of Dokkum, where time seems to have stood still. The town’s distinctive stepped gables and canals create a unique atmosphere, making this historic pilgrimage site captivating not only for pilgrims but for all who visit.
Today, you will cycle through typical Frisian landscapes as you make your way back to Leeuwarden. With only a few kilometres to cover, you’ll have plenty of time to explore the city upon arrival. A visit to the Fries Museum, the largest provincial museum in the Netherlands, is a must. It houses thousands of artefacts spanning art, culture, and history. Alternatively, enjoy a leisurely stroll along Kleine Kerkstraat, one of the most charming shopping streets in the Netherlands, where you can soak in the atmosphere and perhaps do a little shopping.
