Back to nature by bike. But then back to the hotel? Not on this trip! From Passau to Vienna you cycle along the Danube and always spend your family cycling vacation on a farm. The farmers are still active, so you will encounter a wide variety of animals, but you will also have discovered the joy of accommodation. Get up in the morning to freshly baked bread and try homemade jam and handmade cheese, which you certainly won‘t find in the supermarket. On the day‘s stages, the Danube is the main focus. At the end you will reach the capital of Austria and go home with the feeling of having experienced something very special, something not everyday.
Three rivers, flowing in three directions converge in Passau: the Danube, Inn and Ilz river. This unique spectacle is just one of the reasons why you should arrive early for your family cycling vacation along the Austrian Danube. Discover the baroque old town with St. Stephen's Cathedral at its center. The view of the city from the fortress is unique.
At the Three river city of Passau, you now meet the Danube river. You will follow the Danube all the way to the Austrian capital of Vienna. Shortly before Schlögen, you will pass through the Danube Loop, an incomparable natural spectacle. You now comfortably follow the Danube Cycle Route to Feldkirchen at the Danube.
After breakfast, you first cycle to Ottensheim. Here you switch your mode of transport to train and take a leisurely ride to Linz. The largest city in the region offers various sights. The best way to see it all is a short bike tour. Those with a sweet tooth will of course be looking for a slice of genuine Linzer Torte. Back on the bike, you soon reach the small municipality of Mauthausen in Machland. The long history of the region is displayed at the Celtic Museum. Now there are only few more kilometers left to cycle towards today's destination, Mitterkirchen.
While the landscape has been wide and open up to this point, this picture changes from Grein onwards. Here you are at the entrance to Strudengau region. The Danube makes its way through several faults here. Thus numerous rapids used to be located here. Nowadays the river is used to generate electricity thus today's course is much more mellow.
Melk Abbey is considered the gateway to the Wachau region. The famous wine region offers numerous specialties for the body and soul. In 2000 it has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many winegrowers offer wine tastings here. We recommend enjoying a dry Riesling.
Today you follow the Danube through the second part of the Wachau. The region was fiercly disputed during the centuries due to the fertile soil of the region and the advantage of the Danube river. Thus you'll find several castle ruins as evidence. Such as the Hinterhaus ruins near Spitz and Dürnstein Castle. Here according to legends, Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned. In addition to its wine the Wachau region is famous for growing apricots.
Your last stage of your bike vacaction along the Austrian Danube begins with a train ride to Tulln. Here you get back on your bike for the last time and enjoy a leisurely ride to Vienna. One afternoon is certainly not enough to get to know Austria's capital city in total. However, there should be just enough time for a walk to the Prater public park or a visit to one of its iconic cafés.
