This relaxing family cycling holiday in Bavaria takes you along quiet roads, away from the traffic, through Franconian lakelands and the Altmühltal valley. The lakes here, which were artificially landscaped, now appear quite natural. Dive into the water of the Altmühl and Brombachsee lakes, follow the traces of the Romans in Weißenburg and explore the romantic castle of Pappenheim. Not far from the shoreline you‘ll find not only thermal waters but also the most beautiful sandy beaches. Expect to see weird and wonderful rock formations along the Altmühl. And there‘s always a playground or picnic spot close to your route. This is a holiday that not only families will enjoy, but anyone who is wanting to get away from the hectic of everyday life.
Your family cycling holiday starts in the middle of the Franconian lake district, the attractive holiday area with lots of leisure-time activities to offer. This is where the Roman limes once coursed; the medieval town fortifications, baroque buildings and pretty timbre-framed houses narrate the town's long history. Altmühlsee Lake is right on the edge of the town. Why not test the quality of the water yourself and dive in for a dip?
Today you will go on a trip all round Brombachsee Lake. There are many playgrounds along the cycle path. Laze around at any of the many sandy beaches or try some of the refreshments in a beer garden. But you won't just be spending your day at the waterside, but right on the water! Enjoy a trip on Europe's biggest passenger Trimaran complete with restaurant and a playboat for children on the deck.
Your cycling holiday continues today along peaceful pathways through woods, fields and meadows to Pleinfeld. From there you cycle along the Swabian Rezat river, towards today's destination. Follow the tracks of the Romans in Weißenburg and explore the winding streets of the historic quarter. Parts of the impressive, mighty city wall are still intact.
In Treuchtlingen you meet the Almuehl again and follow it to Pappenheim. From the castle of Pappenheim you get a fantastic view of the Altmuehl Valley. Before the castle walls, a wonderful panorama opens up over the Altmühltal valley – through which you will be cycling to today's destination, the modest town of Wettelsheim, before the gates of Treuchtlingen.
This section is pleasantly flat and short. This leaves you enough time for a relaxed visit to the thermal baths in Treuchtlingen or a refreshing dip in Altmühlsee Lake when you arrive in Gunzenhausen. You follow the Altmühl downstream and enjoy the peace and quiet of this idyllic countryside before you cycle to Gunzenhausen.
