Athletically inclined cyclists will truly appreciate this Sporty bike tour at the Danube in Austria. Over four stages, you will cover 325 km, immersing yourself in the stunning landscapes of the Danube Valley while exploring the rich cultural and historical heritage along the historic towpaths of one of Europe’s most popular cycling routes. Notable stops on your journey include Passau, Linz, Melk, and, of course, Vienna. Upon reaching Vienna, you can take pride in your accomplishment and indulge in local delights such as schnitzel, Sachertorte, or Kaiserschmarrn.
Welcome to Upper Austria! After checking into your room, we invite you to explore the charming town of Schärding. Stroll through its picturesque streets and admire the colorful buildings showcasing the Inn-Salzach architectural style. Be sure to visit the renowned late Baroque Silberzeile facades in the upper town square, named after the affluent merchants who once resided here.
You will cycle leisurely along the Inn River to Passau, where it converges with the Ilz and the Danube. Continuing along the north bank of the Danube, you'll reach the breathtaking Schlögener Schlinge, where the river makes a dramatic 180° bend around a massive granite outcrop. This stunning natural spectacle can be best appreciated from the water. For those seeking adventure, consider a detour to the Haichenbach ruins shortly after Niederranna before proceeding to Aschach.
You will cycle alongside the Danube through the avian paradise of the Eferding Basin, leading you to Linz, the capital of Upper Austria and the European Capital of Culture in 2009. Continuing through Enns, you will enter the enchanting regions of Strudengau and Nibelungengau. Take a moment to relax in the charming Celtic village of Mitterkirchen before proceeding to Grein, where you can explore Austria's oldest municipal theater and the magnificent Greinburg Castle.
In the morning, you will cycle towards the impressive Danube power station in Persenbeug. Your route then takes a more romantic turn as you travel from the pilgrimage church in Maria Taferl to Melk, home to its renowned abbey. This gateway to the Wachau region provides an enchanting atmosphere amidst lush orchards and vineyards. Continuing through Spitz and Dürnstein, you will arrive in the charming wine town of Krems, where you can celebrate with a glass of exquisite regional wine.
Leaving the picturesque Wachau wine region, you will cycle towards the historic Roman town of Tulln. Here, a contrasting landscape unfolds as the expansive Tulln fields replace the heights of Wachau. Your journey continues through Greifenstein and Klosterneuburg, leading you to the vibrant metropolis of Vienna. Whether you choose to explore the grandeur of Schönbrunn Palace or the iconic St. Stephen's Cathedral, Vienna offers a diverse array of attractions for every traveler.
