You will experience over 400 kilometres of the varied river on the cycling vacation along the Main. You cycle through the ever-changing landscapes. Sometimes through dark green forests, with castles and palaces all around. Then along huge vineyards and through blossoming orchards. But it is not only the charming landscape that will delight you. During your cycling vacation along the Main, you will also get to know and love numerous large and small towns along the river. Look forward to the unmistakable charm of the former imperial city of Bamberg and the old residential city of Würzburg. Stroll through the winding alleys of Wertheim and explore the unique Miltenberg. Plan plenty of breaks on your tour and visit the quaint wine taverns and secluded beer gardens that are often right along the way. Toast to a successful day with regional wines and enjoy delicacies such as Blaue Zipfel (bratwurst) or Fränkische Schäufela (pork), which are served to you by the kind hosts on your cycling vacation along the Main.
After your arrival, you should definitely start your Cycling Vacation along the Main with a city walk through Bamberg's multi-faceted old town. Like Rome, Bamberg was built on seven hills. Visit the medieval imperial cathedral, the Old Hofburg and the new residence. In the evening, we recommend a stop at one of the cosy and quaint brewery pubs. Here you can fortify yourself for the coming days with Franconian delicacies.
On the saddle, you will soon pass the border between beer and wine Franconia behind Bamberg. The first evidence of the region's distinctive wine culture is the cosy half-timbered town of Zeil am Main. Your stage destination Hassfurt lies idyllically between the Haßberge and Steigerwald nature parks. In Hassfurt you should not miss a visit to the artistically designed Ritterkapelle St. Maria by Tilmann Riemenschneider.
During your Cycling Vacation along the Main, experience directly why cycling on the Main is called pleasure cycling. You will cycle leisurely through romantically situated wine villages, lush green meadows along the Main and past blossoming orchards. Shortly before Volkach, you should pay a visit to the famous floating Madonna in the Rosary in the pilgrimage church. Your stage destination is the centre of the Maindreieck wine region. Whether Riesling, Silvaner or Pinot Blanc - treat yourself to a glass on top of the kilometres you have covered.
Between Volkach and Sommerach you follow the most spectacular winding of the Main - the Mainschleife. From Vogelsburg Castle you can see the breathtaking panorama from above and take a first souvenir photo. Accompanied by barrages, marinas and vineyards, you roll leisurely through the "sugar town" of Ochsenfurt. You will pass a few more charming villages until you reach your stage destination.
You cycle towards today's highlight of your Cycling Vacation along the Main. The medieval residential city of Würzburg welcomes you with numerous highlights. Discover the Old Main Bridge, the Marienkapelle Chapel and the Würzburg Residence on a leisurely city tour. Much smaller, but no less worth seeing, is your destination for the day, Karlstadt. At the end of the stage, wander through the small alleys with their numerous half-timbered houses and defiant town towers. If you want to climb high again, the ruins of Karlsburg Castle on the opposite side of the Main River are a worthwhile destination. The climb is rewarded with a beautiful view of the Main.
The landscape changes, the Main valley becomes narrower and more densely wooded. Direct your gaze upwards more often today and discover romantic castles everywhere, like the Scherenburg ruins above Gemünden. In the town, the Main triangle and the Main quadrangle meet. The Main forms a triangle between Schweinfurt, Marktbreit and Gemünden. In addition to Gemünden, the cornerstones of the Main quadrangle are the towns of Wertheim, Miltenberg and Aschaffenburg, which you will get to know on the following stages. Marktheidenfeld is all about Franconian wine culture.
You will quickly reach the next highlight of your Cycling Vacation along the Main: The medieval residential town of Wertheim is easily recognisable from afar thanks to its landmark, the mighty castle ruins above the old town. How about a glass of wine on the terrace of the castle restaurant? Back on your bike, you can visit the Henneburg, the next castle ruin, just a few loops along the Main. It lies about 100 metres above Stadtprozelten. And of course, your destination today is also overlooked by a fortification: Freudenberg by Freudenberg Castle and Bürgstadt by Mildenburg Castle in neighbouring Miltenberg.
The boats on the Main accompany you to the small town of Klingenberg with its wine taverns and hedge inns. Further along the river you roll on quiet paths towards your stage destination. Even from a distance, the tower of Johannisburg Castle shows you the way to Aschaffenburg. Take some time to explore the historic town. The wealthy electors of Mainz valued the town as a summer residence and headquarters for their court hunts in the Spessart.
Park landscapes of allotments and villa districts are gradually replaced by restaurants and beer gardens on your Cycling Vacation along the Main. After crossing the state border between Bavaria and Hesse, you should make a stop in Seligenstadt. The lush rose and spice garden of the Einhard Basilica is a splendour. Cycle through the Brothers Grimm town of Hanau and soon reach the Main metropolis of Frankfurt.
Tackle the last stage of your Cycling Vacation along the Main. You cycle through meadow orchards, vineyards and wide fields to Flörsheim, the gateway to the Rheingau. Continue through the half-timbered town of Hochheim. Enjoy the Main landscapes once more before arriving in the stronghold of Rhenish carnival. You can end your last evening in a cosy pub in the old town.
