Fresh wind, high and low tide, screaming seagulls, grazing sheep and the taste of salt in the air - our cycle tour along the North Sea coast takes you along the Schleswig-Holstein coast and takes you from Esbjerg in Denmark to the Hanseatic city of Hamburg in nine days. With an average of 75 kilometers per stage, our cycle tour along the North Sea coast is almost free of climbs, mostly close to or directly on the coast and the Wadden Sea. After starting in Esbjerg, you have the opportunity to visit the island of Fanø. Continue to Ribe, whose medieval alleyways have many stories to tell about Denmark's oldest town. The Wadden Sea islands of Mandø and Rømø will give you that island feeling again. Enjoy the tranquillity and nature on the islets before you head for the next highlight of our cycle tour along the North Sea coast - the island of Sylt. Explore Sylt on a long or short tour, just as you wish. Back on the mainland, you will get to know North Frisia with the towns of Niebüll, Husum and St. Peter-Ording as well as Dithmarschen with St. Michaelisdonn and Brunsbüttel on the Kiel Canal. Our cycle tour along the Elbe takes you along the North Sea coast to your destination of Hamburg.
Our cycling trip along the North Sea coast is particularly suitable for experienced cyclists who are fit and can adapt well to the changing weather conditions on the North Sea and its islands.
Your cycle trip starts in Esbjerg, the largest city on the Danish North Sea coast. The harbor town was founded a good 150 years ago. The Vandtårn, a water tower, is one of the town's landmarks. It was built at the end of the 19th century and offers a magnificent view of the city. Another highlight of Esbjerg is the eye-catching sculpture group Man by the Sea on Sædding Beach. You can find out more about the history of fishing, which once shaped the city, at the Fiskeri- og Søfartmuseet, which is also dedicated to the development of shipping.
At the start of the first stage of your cycling trip along the North Sea coast, you have the opportunity to take a detour to the island of Fanø. A ferry (not included) will take you to the Wadden Sea island in just a few minutes, which awaits you with forests, dunes and a seemingly endless beach. With a bit of luck, you will discover washed up amber before heading back to the mainland. You travel along the coast to Ribe, the oldest town in Denmark. Ribe Cathedral is unmistakable on the horizon from afar. From one of its unequal towers, the Bürgerturm, you have a beautiful view of the Wadden Sea and the region.
From Ribe you cycle back to the North Sea. If you like, pay a visit to the island of Mandø. The best way to reach the tidal island is from Vester Vedsted with the Mandøbuses (not included). During the crossing you have a wonderful view of the Wadden Sea. Back on the mainland, the next island is already your destination - Rømø. Cycle along the Rømødæmningen causeway to the island, which is known for having the largest sandy beach in Northern Europe. Get to know it on a tour that takes you past Kommandørgården, the whalebone fence and Rømø Church. You will spend the night in Havneby, the island's main town.
The fourth day of your cycling trip along the North Sea coast also offers an island feeling. From Havneby, take the ferry to the island of Sylt. Treat yourself to a delicious fish sandwich at Germany's northernmost fish stall in List before exploring the island. A network of cycle paths over 200 kilometers long leaves nothing to be desired on a round trip. Whether you are drawn to the Hörnum lighthouse, the Rantum Basin nature reserve or the cliff coast in Morsum, Sylt offers fantastic landscapes and many sights worth seeing. In Westerland, take the train that will take you to your overnight stay in Niebüll. If you spend the night in Schlüttsiel, you still have a few kilometers to go before you reach your destination for the day.
Let the wind blow around your nose along the North Sea coast when you reach the causeway to Hamburger Hallig after a few kilometers. It is easy to reach the small peninsula by bike. From here you have a beautiful view of the surrounding Hallig islands in the Wadden Sea. Back on the mainland, you cycle along the Beltringharder Koog to the Nordstrand peninsula. You will soon have reached Husum. Take a stroll through the hometown of the writer Theodor Storm with its colorful harbor and 16th century castle. It is the only castle on the Schleswig-Holstein North Sea coast.
From Husum, the cycling trip along the North Sea coast first takes you to the Eiderstedt peninsula. The red and white striped Westerheversand lighthouse is guaranteed to catch your eye. Probably the most famous lighthouse in Germany, it has a viewing platform from which you have a wonderful view of the surrounding area and the sea. Continue to St. Peter-Ording, which is known for its 12-kilometre-long sandy beach. After a longer break for swimming and sunbathing, you cycle to Tönning. The Multimar Wattforum, which provides information about life in the Wadden Sea, is well worth a visit. You spend the night in Tönning or Lunden
.
You cycle along the Eiderwatt and past Germany's largest coastal protection structure, the Eidersperrwerk, to Büsum, famous for its crabs. Fortify yourself with a delicious crab roll before heading inland to Dithmarschen. In Meldorf, it is worth visiting the cathedral, which is in typical North German brick Gothic style. The route continues to St. Michaelisdonn. The town's landmark is the Dutch windmill Edda. Spend the night in Brunsbüttel and get to know the Kiel Canal today
.
From the Dithmarschen, we head to the Kiel Canal. It has been in operation since 1895 and is one of the busiest waterways in the world. Watch small and large ships impressively pass through the canal locks. Continue along the Elbe. Take a break in Glückstadt. This small town on the Elbe was once created on the drawing board and is famous for its herring specialty, Glückstädter Matjes. Passing the ship's welcome facility in Wedel, you reach your destination of Hamburg.
