The cycling tour along the Weser is for trained cyclists who are not afraid of longer stages and still value sightseeing. You start your bike tour where the Weser has its origin. In Hann. Münden, the Werra and Fulda rivers flow into each other and merge into one of the most important rivers in Germany, the Weser. You cycle along the mountain ranges of the Weserbergland and reach the vast land of the North German Plain at Porta Westfalica. Yours is Germany‘s smallest state and the former Hanseatic city of the same name, Bremen. What makes a bike tour along the Weser so special? These are the excellently developed bike paths through idyllic and tranquil nature, sleepy villages with breathtakingly beautiful marketplaces, magnificent manor houses and castles. The architectural styles from Romanesque to Gothic to the important keyword of the so-called Weser Renaissance will accompany you during the entire bike tour along the Weser.
You start your bike tour on the Weser amidst the wooded hills of the Weserbergland. In Hann. Münden, visit the town hall with its fantastically magnificent Weser Renaissance-style facade. If you can't get enough of the architectural style, we recommend the Welfenschloss, which also houses the town museum. A beautiful view over the city and the ridges of the surrounding forests you have again from the Tilly-Schanze. Where the Weser takes its origin you can see at the so-called Weserstein. There is much to see and much to experience in the pretty Hann. Münden!
The first stage of the bike tour along the Weser is coming up. You follow the winding course of the Weser, past fairytale castles and palaces. Pretty little towns like Bad Karlshafen and Beverungen, whose history dates back to the time of Charlemagne, lie on your way. To your right are the foothills of the second largest contiguous forest mountain range in northern Germany. The red sandstone of the Hanoverian cliffs glows red. Corvey Monastery near Höxter was founded by a son of Charlemagne in 822 and is well worth seeing. Holzminden is the city of scents and flavors. At the end of the 19th century, it was here that it was possible to produce vanillin synthetically.
You will drive through one of the most scenic sections of the Oberweserbergland. The lush green meadows of the Weser floodplains are your constant companion. Soon you have reached the Münchhausenstadt Bodenwerder. Shortly after, you will walk in the footsteps of the Pied Piper in Hamelin. Take a rewarding walk through the magnificent and perfectly restored old town with its multitude of richly decorated half-timbered and sandstone buildings of the Weser Renaissance. Strengthen yourself with a traditional Bregenwurst with kale, flambéed Rattenschwänzen or Weserspatzen. You will spend the night in Rinteln, an architectural gem.
The Weser Cycle Route now leaves it up to you to choose how this first part of the stage should look. One option is to cycle via Bad Oeynhausen, where the German Fairy Tale and Weser Legend Museum is located, to the legendary Porta Westfalica . The Weser leaves the Weserbergland between the Wiehengebirge and Wesergebirge mountains and flows north into the North German Plain. The landscape now changes seriously, the hills and forests are now behind you. In front of you is marsh and geest landscape. You should plan a visit to the glassworks tower in Gernheim and the water and wind mills in Harrienstedt and Großenheerse.
Take a first rest in Nienburg, the cute town on the German Half-Timbered Houses Route. In the Middle Ages, Nienburg was an important fortress town on the Weser crossing. Today, lovingly restored half-timbered buildings and patrician houses await you. Hopefully, you will not leave Nienburg without having tried Bärentatzen, a sweet that has been produced here since the 18th century. You will spend the night in Verden an der Aller, which lies before the river flows into the Weser. The old town is, how could it be otherwise, peppered with pretty half-timbered buildings. Visit the cathedral, a wooden church in Charlemagne's time, now a three-nave Gothic hall church.
The last, considerably shorter stage of the bike tour along the Weser brings you to the old Hanseatic city of Bremen. Before that, you should take a look at Erbhof Castle in Thedinghausen. It is one of the outstanding examples of the Weser Renaissance in the Middle Weser region. At the end of your bike tour on the Weser, take a harbor tour in Bremen and visit the Bremen Roland in front of the town hall before you start your return journey. Of course, we will be happy to extend your stay in beautiful Bremen.
