On our cycling tour in Styria you will get to know one of the most diverse river bike paths in the Alpine region. From the Hohe Tauern National Park, the tour takes you from Graz across Styria. From the mountain peaks of the Salzburg Lungau to the lush green hills of Styria. From small remote villages to the vibrant provincial capital of Graz - the Styria cycling tour is full of contrasts. Along the Mur, you will get to know the extremely worth seeing old town of Graz, St. Michael im Lungau surrounded by high mountains, the medieval beer and timber town of Murau, the Mediterranean-like Judenburg and with Bruck an der Mur, one of the oldest towns in Austria. And what's the best thing about the Styria cycling tour? For the most part you cycle gently downhill along the course of the river through green forests, seemingly endless meadows and fields, and lush vineyards. On the way, the numerous wine taverns directly along the bike path invite you to linger. Try the regional delicacies such as the famous Brettljause with roast pork, cheese, pumpkin seed spread and brown bread. You will enjoy the time during the Styria cycling tour!
.
Your cycling tour begins in the Styrian capital of Graz. Stroll leisurely through the main square, which forms the centerpiece of the medieval old town. Be sure to also explore the surrounding narrow streets with Renaissance and Baroque style buildings or visit one of the numerous museums. In the evening treat yourself to a dinner in one of the local restaurants.
Around noon, the transfer bus will take you from the provincial capital of Graz to the idyllic St. Michael in Salzburg's Lungau region. The former mining village is located at 1075 meters above sea level in one of the sunniest regions of Austria. Let your eyes wander to the surrounding high peaks of the Radstädter Tauern, Obertauern and Nockberge mountains. During a walk through the village, you should pay a visit to the parish church of St. Michael.
Today your cycling tour in Styria really starts, because you get on your bike for the first time. A transfer bus will first take you from St. Michael in the direction of the source of the Mur. On your bike, you'll make a partly very steep ascent to the Sticklerhütte. From there you can only continue on foot. After a hike of about one hour you will reach the source of the Mur at 1898 meters. Enjoy the fresh mountain air and the beautiful view! After the hike to the source of the Mur, you will return to St. Michael after a rapid descent along the course of the Mur past blooming alpine meadows.
Today you hop on your bike again and cycle to the brewery town of Murau. The bike path leads you through the river valley framed by high mountains past idyllic farms. Soon you will reach the town of Tamsweg. The historic market square is perfect for a break. You cycle through the most densely wooded area of Styria, where wood processing and wood crafts have a long tradition. In Murau you will encounter imposing wooden buildings, Murau Castle and a town center worth seeing. Enjoy a glass of home-brewed Murau beer in the evening. Cheers!
The cycling tour takes you through the narrows of the Mur valley at the foot of the Niedere Tauern. You will be accompanied here by the Murtalbahn, a historic narrow-gauge railroad. If you are interested you will be able to visit the associated narrow-gauge railway museum in Frojach. Soon you will recognize the mighty Frauenburg ruins towering over the Mur Valley from afar. During a visit you will travel back in time. Today's destination is Judenburg in the Zirbenland region, with its Mediterranean charm. Be sure to climb the highest city tower in Austria, which is home to one of the most modern planetariums in Europe.
The bike path leads you through densely wooded sections, past one of the oldest churches in Styria - the pilgrimage church of Maria Buch. Via Knittelfeld, the route continues to Leoben. Both of these former industrial towns nowadays are inviting guests with their well-kept centres and lively pedestrian zones, thanks to their successful moderniziation. With the historic trading town of Bruck an der Mur you will soon have reached your stage destination. A tour of the old town is the best way to explore the city at the confluence of the Mürz and Mur rivers. Discover the Gothic Kornmesserhaus and enjoy the fantastic view of the surrounding countryside from the Schlossberg plateau.
Through the Mur valley, which narrows for a short part, you will soon reach Fronleiten. Plan a stop at the main bridge, enjoy the view of the picturesque silhouette of the city and stroll through the historic market. Along the way in the direction of Graz you will experience pure nature! High rock faces, old farms and orchards line your path. With Graz you have reached the destination of your cycling tour in Styria. Use the time to explore the city further. Be sure to visit the 123-meter Schlossberg with the city's landmark - the centuries-old clock tower. From up here you have a magnificent view over the city! If your legs are too tired after the efforts of the last days, you can also use the cable car!
