This cycle tour is designed as a centre-based tour, so you don't have to pack your bags in between. You will stay overnight in Bad Dürkheim for the duration of the tour. Visit Dürkheimer Riesenfass, the biggest barrel in the world, and take part in a wine tasting organized for you. Bad Dürkheim is the ideal starting point for your day trips on our cycling tour in the Palatinate. Get to know Hambach Castle in Neustadt an der Weinstraße and pay a visit to the venerable cathedral in the imperial city of Speyer. Landau, the largest wine-growing community in Germany, is also on your itinerary, as is the medieval castle of Neuleiningen.
Enjoyment is a top priority on our cycling tour in the Palatinate. The ride through seemingly endless vineyards, beautiful wine-growing villages and the experience of more than 2000 years of history and culture in the region will inspire you. Last but not least, the excellent Palatinate wine and hearty cuisine perfectly round off this 7-day cycle tour.
Welcome to your cycling tour in the Palatinate! Explore the surrounding area after checking into the hotel. Take a walk through Kurpark, the green heart of the city. Discover the salt works at the foot of the spa gardens. It is one of the longest irrigated graduation buildings in Germany, which was used to extract table salt. Feel the health-promoting effects of the salty air on a tour around the salt works. If you want to get on your bike now, we recommend a detour to the Limburg monastery ruins and the former Hardenburg fortress.
Your first day of cycling is all about Palatinate wine. First you cycle to Neustadt an der Weinstraße. Situated on the edge of the Palatinate Forest, the famous wine town impresses with its old town adorned with many half-timbered houses. Visit Hambach Castle and the twin-towered collegiate church. It is home to the world's largest cast steel bell ringing. The cycle path takes you back to Bad Dürkheim through vineyards and the wine-growing towns of Wachenheim and Deidesheim.
Today you cycle along the Rhine. You reach Speyer along the arms of the Old Rhine. The imperial city is one of the oldest cities in Germany. The imposing Speyer Cathedral is the largest preserved Romanesque church in the world. Enjoy the magnificent panoramic view of the city from the viewing platform of the south-west tower. Not far from the cathedral, the Museum of Technology is well worth a visit. It displays historical exhibits from ship, vehicle and aircraft construction. Follow the Kaiser-Konrad-Radweg (cycle path) through floodplain forests and vineyards to Bad Dürkheim. Alternatively, return by train on your own.
Today's stage of your cycling tour in the Palatinate takes you to the romantic winegrowing villages of Sankt Martin and Edenkoben. The wine and climatic health resort of Sankt Martin impresses with its quaint vineyards, narrow alleyways and charming half-timbered houses. Visit Villa Ludwigshöhe in Edenkoben. Once the summer residence of Bavarian King Ludwig I, it now serves as a gallery and museum. Your destination for the day is the fortress and garden town of Landau. Germany's largest wine-growing community impresses with a townscape that reflects almost every era of the past centuries. You can take the train back to Bad Dürkheim on your own.
From the breakfast table, already in Fränsem. This is what the Palatinate people call Freinsheim, just a few kilometers by bike from Bad Dürkheim. Walk around the almost completely preserved medieval ring wall. A short detour to the historic old town is well worthwhile. Continue via Grünstadt to the medieval castle of Neuleiningen. The ascent to the castle requires some effort. The view of the Palatinate Forest and the Upper Rhine Plain makes up for your efforts. You cycle through extensive vineyards back to Bad Dürkheim.
Enjoy the local wines on our cycling tour in the Palatinate. Today, the focus is on the local winegrowers. Enjoy the view of Roman buildings, castle ruins and countless lush green vines from the gently rolling vineyards around Bad Dürkheim. Get to know Dürkheimer Riesenfass in Bad Dürkheim. With a diameter of 13.5 meters, it is the largest barrel in the world. The barrel houses a wine bar.
