Wide views over the sea, grazing sheep on kilometre-long dikes, fresh sea air and the play of high and low tide - our cycling tour along the North Sea promises a varied short holiday in just a few days, taking you to the far north of Germany and the south of Denmark. Your circular tour starts in Niebüll in the heart of North Frisia. On the first day of our cycling tour along the North Sea, you will head to the island of Sylt, the northernmost island in Germany. Fine sandy beaches, vast heath and dune landscapes as well as a lush selection of cycle paths stretching over 200 kilometres across the entire island await you. From List, at the northernmost tip of Sylt, you can easily take a ferry to the Danish Wadden Sea island of Rømø. Circle the island, walk along the kilometre-wide beach and watch seals on the nearby sandbanks. Back on the mainland, our cycling tour along the North Sea takes you along the coast to the pretty towns of Højer, Møgeltønder and Tønder. Back in Niebüll, our cycling tour along the North Sea ends.
Your cycling tour along the North Sea begins in the North Frisian town of Niebüll. The town's name derives from the Frisian for new settlement. After your arrival at the hotel, grab your bikes and explore the town and its surroundings. How about a visit to the Natural History Museum, where you can learn more about nature on both sides of the German-Danish border? You will spend the night in Niebüll or Risum.
Today you will get to know the island of Sylt, the Queen of the North Sea. A comfortable train ride will take you from Niebüll to the spa town of Westerland. Sylt's 200-kilometer network of bike paths offers you a variety of ways to discover the island on a short or long bike tour - just as you like. From List you take the ferry to the Danish island of Rømø. The idyllic island has one of the largest sandy beaches in Europe and offers unique nature experiences far from the mainland. You will spend the night in Havneby, the main town of the island.
You leave Rømø via the nine kilometer long Rømødæmningen, which leads you back to the mainland. Your cycling tour along the North Sea will take you first to Højer on the North Sea Coast Cycle Route. The small harbor town is home to the largest wooden Dutchman's mill in Northern Europe. Continue on to neighboring Møgeltønder, which proudly calls Denmark's most beautiful village street its own. Just a stone's throw away is Tønder. This pretty little town was once situated by the sea and made a name for itself from the 17th century onwards with the traditional handicraft technique of lace-making. You will spend the night in Højer or Tønder.
After you pass the German-Danish border on today's stage of your cycling tour along the North Sea, it's worth making a detour to the Emil Nolde Museum in Seebüll. It offers insights into the life and work of the expressionist painter, who spent many years of his life here. Passing the lake landscape of Gotteskoogsee, which is ideal for observing rare animal and plant species, you will cycle to your overnight destinations Niebüll or Risum.
