This short cycling tour along the Main is pure pleasure. On flat, well-maintained routes, mostly in the immediate vicinity of the river, you literally roll from Bamberg to Würzburg. You cycle past green vineyards, beautiful orchards and idyllic river meadows. Picturesque Franconian towns and idyllic wine villages await you along the route. The World Heritage cities of Bamberg and Würzburg offer you cultural and historical eye candy. This short cycle tour is also a culinary delight. In your stage towns, numerous rustic inns and traditional wine taverns offer the opportunity to stop for a bite to eat. Depending on the region, treat yourself to a beer or a glass of wine to go with the delicious Franconian specialities. While your starting point Bamberg is in Bierfranken (beer Franconia), the majority of your cycle tour leads through Weinfranken (Wine Franconia).
In Bamberg, numerous sights are waiting to be discovered by you. Like Rome, Bamberg was built on seven hills. Plan your journey so that you have enough time to explore Franconian Rome. Visit the medieval Imperial Cathedral, the Old Court and the Old Town Hall in the middle of the Regnitz River. Stroll through the old town with its winding alleys and enchanting houses from different eras. In Bamberg you will experience one of the largest intact old town ensembles in Europe. In the evening, we recommend a stop at one of the cosy and quaint brewery pubs. Enjoy the specialities of Franconian cuisine on your short cycling tour along the Main to Würzburg.
Out of Bamberg, follow the Regnitz on its way to the Main. After a few kilometres you have reached the Main. On the Main cycle path you now follow always along the river. Shortly after Bamberg, you pedal unnoticed across the border between beer and wine Franconia. In the medieval half-timbered town of Zeil, you will encounter the region's distinctive wine culture for the first time. In Hassfurt, you should not miss a visit to the artistically designed Ritterkapelle St. Maria, before travelling on to today's destination, the ball bearing town of Schweinfurt. The Georg Schäfer Museum, the most important private collection of 19th century art in the German-speaking world, awaits art lovers here.
You cycle leisurely through romantically situated wine villages past the green meadows of the Main and orchards. You will experience directly why cycling along the Main is called relaxed cycling. Shortly before Volkach lies the pilgrimage church Maria im Weingarten. It houses the famous floating Madonna in the Rosary by Tilman Riemenschneider. Volkach is the centre of the Main Triangle wine region. Excellent Franconian wines thrive here and you should try them!
The Main continues to wind in large loops through the valley to the wine merchant town of Kitzingen. You cycle through the Volkacher Main river loop and past magnificent river meadows. Behind Kitzingen, the Main makes a big detour. You will cover the last few kilometres of your short cycling tour along the Main in a relaxed manner and will soon reach Würzburg. Take plenty of time to get to know the Franconian metropolis. The highlight of your city tour will undoubtedly be the Würzburg Residence. But you should also not miss the Marienberg Fortress and St. Kilian's Cathedral.
