The Connemara region in the west of Ireland covers the counties of Galway and Mayo. Discover rugged granite landscapes and beautifully situated rivers and lakes on this cycle tour in Ireland. In the north of Connemara, the peaks of the Twelve Bens dominate the landscape, while the south consists mainly of heathland and moorland. Visit beautifully situated castles and monasteries, Ireland's only fjord Killary Harbour and the Aran Island of Inishmore in Galway Bay.
Located at the mouth of the River Corrib into the Atlantic Ocean, Galway is considered Ireland's most youthful city due to the two colleges located in the city. Wander the medieval streets and watch salmon migrate up the Corrib from the Salmon Weir Bridge between April and July. You will find a beautiful souvenir in all of Galway's jewelry stores – the Claddagh friendship ring. In the evening or the next morning, you will take a transfer to Clonbur.
In the morning, you will take a transfer to Clonbur, from where your cycle tour starts. The town lies between the two lakes Lough Mask and Lough Corrib, on the banks of which stands the impressive Ashford Castle. You cycle north on quiet side roads and between green meadows with countless grazing sheep. You will reach Westport via the foothills of the Partry Mountains, accompanied by fantastic views.
On your cycle tour in Ireland, you will first cycle between Clew Bay and Croagh Patrick Mountain. According to legend, St. Patrick, the Irish national saint, fasted for 40 days on the summit, which is now an important pilgrimage site. However, your route continues via Louisburgh and through the stunningly beautiful Delphi Valley to Killary Harbour. The panorama of the approximately 15 km long fjord is dominated by the 814 m high Mweelrea, the highest mountain in County Mayo.
Today you cycle into the heart of Connemara, which is dominated by the picturesque peaks of the Twelve Bens. An impressive building is Kylemore Abbey, a castle that has been home to a Benedictine convent since 1920. From Claddaghduff, you can watch cars drive across the beach to Omey Island at low tide. From here, it is not far to Connemara's unofficial capital Clifden.
After the long stage the day before, you have earned a rest day today on your cycle tour in Ireland. Relax on one of the beaches with white sand and clear blue water. You can also explore the picturesque surroundings of Clifden on foot or on horseback. The small town of Clifden itself, which was only founded in 1812, has numerous art galleries that you can visit. In the evening, traditional live music is often played in the bars.
Today you cycle along the rugged south coast of Connemara through the heath and moorland areas typical of the region. Peat is still cut here today and piled up to dry. In the afternoon you reach Rossaveel, from where you take the ferry to the Aran Islands. While fishermen used to live here, most of the approximately 1,200 inhabitants on the islands are now employed in tourism.
Use today to explore the many reminders of the past, be it the ruins of early Christian churches or the spectacular Bronze Age and Iron Age fortifications on the steep cliffs. Return to the mainland in the late afternoon and take a transfer to Galway. Round off the trip in one of the many pubs.
After breakfast, your cycle tour in Ireland is unfortunately already over. However, we are happy to extend your stay in Galway if you do not want to leave the impressive Connemara landscape just yet.
