In the North West of Germany, near the North Sea coast and bordering Holland, we have combined two of the most beautiful cycle routes into an impressive circular route: the German Fen route and the Dollart route. These routes lead along mainly flat paths through fertile fen landscapes, past old-fashioned sluices and impressive Saxon farmsteads, through thick forests and heath fields as well as through expansive moorland and bogland regions. The old star-shaped border fortress of Bourtange (16th Century), the most beautiful castle in the Groningen region (Menkemaburg), a bog museum and the Elisabethfehn Canal are all located along the route. The Fen and Dollart cycle path is also suitable for untrained cyclists.

Cycling Tour in Germany and the Netherlands

Day 1: Individual arrival in Emden

In the Middle Ages, the Emden had the notorious reputation as a pirate stronghold until the inhabitants of Hamburg successfully “smoked out” the pirates. The industrialization of the Ruhr region, with Emden serving as a vital harbor, spurred significant economic growth for the town. Today, the region boasts outstanding cultural facilities, including the art gallery donated by Henri Nannen.

Your cycling tour in Germany and the Netherlands begins with a short ride to Petkum. From there, you'll take the ferry (not included) to Ditzum, a charming village featuring a quaint fishing harbor. Continuing along the Ems River, you’ll cycle towards the historic town of Leer, which served as the seat of the Frisian chiefs during the Early Middle Ages. Shortly after setting out today, your cycling tour will cross from Germany into the Netherlands' province of Groningen. Be sure to visit the star-shaped fortress of Bourtange, a remarkable 16th-century site. As you cycle through the lush fen landscape, dotted with prosperous farms and traditional sluices, you will arrive at your destination for the day: Stadskanaal. This town, developed in the 1960s based on modern dutch planning principles, offers a unique glimpse into contemporary Dutch architecture and design.

Day 5: Stadskanaal – Groningen, approx. 45 km

Quiet cycle paths meander through dense forests, heaths, and expansive moors typical of the Drenthe province. As you pedal on, you'll pass through idyllic villages and arrive in Zuidlaren, known for its impressive Saxon farmhouses and Late Romanesque church. Continuing your journey, you will cycle past the scenic Paterswoldsemeer, leading you to the vibrant city of Groningen. There, you can admire the Martini Tower, which originally stood at 127 meters tall but was reduced to 96 meters after the wooden top was lost to a fire during a bonfire celebration.
