Bruges, the capital of the province of West Flanders, is at the heart of this cycle tour. The medieval city centre impresses visitors with artfully adorned buildings, historic churches and romantic canals. Since 2000, Bruges’ centre has been a UNESCO world cultural heritage site and it is the ideal starting point for a diverse centre based tour. Explore the city’s quiet surroundings with its fields, canals and dunes. The blue North Sea, beautiful municipal beaches and the extensive polder landscape create a picturesque backdrop. It is said that Bruges is one of the most beautiful cities in the world – a well-earned title. Bruges is the ideal starting point for a perfect cycling holiday in pretty Flanders.
Bruges, also known as Venice of the North, is the most important art and museum city in Belgium. Explore the rich history of perhaps the most beautiful city in Flanders and take a canal cruise through the medieval old town. This gives a good impression of earlier times, when Bruges was the center of European trade in wool and fabrics. Booked rental bikes are available for you at the hotel.
You cycle in a south-westerly direction to one of the oldest towns in Flanders. Torhout dates back to the second century AD, as finds from Roman times testify. Today you can marvel at two interesting castles. The neo-Gothic d'Aertrycke Castle is surrounded by a large landscaped park. The origins of the moated castle Wijnendale, which now houses a museum, date back to the 11th century.
From Bruges, you cycle via Damme to the North Sea. The small town with its Gothic town hall and eight antique shops is a popular excursion destination. In Knokke, a fashionable seaside resort with luxury boutiques and an art deco-style casino, you will find a 12 km long, fine-grained sandy beach. To the east lies Het Zwin, the largest nature reserve on the Belgian coast. You return to Bruges in the evening.
Once again you head to the North Sea coast. Via the typical polder village of Lissewege, supposedly the most beautiful village in Flanders, you cycle to the vacation resort of De Haan, where Albert Einstein lived for six months in 1933. The Kusttram, a tram line that connects all the towns on the Belgian coast, also stops in De Haan. With a length of 68 kilometers, the line is the longest in the world. Enjoy the day on the soft sandy beach and use it for a dip in the North Sea.
Overnight stay in the elegant 4*-NH Hotel Brugge in the center of Bruges. The 149-room hotel is housed in a former monastery and is a listed building. The rooms are tastefully decorated and make for a pleasant stay. The hotel has a small gym, a terrace and a garden. International dishes are served in the restaurant and you can enjoy a Belgian beer in the bar.
