This cycling tour revolves around the Altmühl Valley Nature Park, beginning in the idyllic village Kinding. You firstly cycle through the romantic Anlauter Valley, which has juniper-lined hillsides. You leisurely ascend the valley and only have to pedal a bit harder shortly before reaching the Limes. On the next day, you enjoy a relaxing flat stage and have the opportunity to go for a swim in the Altmühl Lake. If you would prefer to cycle less, you can visit the Altmühl thermal springs in Treuchtlingen instead. For this journey we have chosen cosy hotels with beer gardens and typical Bavarian charm, sometimes located slightly outside of the town centres.
Kinding is a small, dreamy village, where the rivers Anlauter, Schwarzach and Altmühl meet. If you arrive early enough you will have time to visit the Rumburg ruin. According to legend, those who manage to climb up to the ruin without saying a word on the night of May 1st, will be rewarded with treasure. Booked rental bikes will be available at the hotel.
Today you will cycle to Weißenburg by following the river Anlauter. The town was founded because of the Limes, the former fortified border of the Roman Empire. Today, countless Baroque and half-timbered buildings adorn the historical town centre. Your destination Wettelsheim is located just outside of the gates of the thermal bath town Treuchtlingen.
The lake was created as part of an ambitious engineering project to balance Bavaria’s water resources. Along its 12 km long shore you will find countless inviting spots to go for a refreshing swim. In neighbouring Gunzenhausen, the only town in Bavaria located directly on the Limes, Roman history comes to life at every corner.
The valley becomes noticeably more narrow beginning in Wettelsheim. Here, the river has carved its way deep through the Jurassic rock. Towering castles protect the Altmühl, while you get closer to your next destination – the episcopal see Eichstätt. The field of figures in the Hessen Valley, where over 78 larger than life stone sculptures move, is impressive and definitely worth a visit.
Today’s section is relaxing and doesn’t take a lot of effort, so that you will keep the Altmühl Valley Nature Park in good memory. At the halfway point you will reach Kipfenberg, close to Bavaria’s geographical centre, which is protected by an impressive castle. The river Altmühl will lead you back to Kinding.
