Adriatic Sea – that sounds like deep blue sea, long sandy beaches and lots of sun. On your cycling tour along the Adriatic Sea you will experience much more than that! You will cycle through three countries in one week – one more worth seeing than the other. Get to know the numerous sights of Venice and discover Trieste. A fascinating, multicultural city with Austrian, Italian and Slovenian influences. Along the coast, as well as inland, explore medieval fortified towns and enchanting castles like Miramare and Duino. After so much culture, you deserve to relax and unwind. On almost every stage you cycle through well-known seaside resorts such as Jesolo, Caorle, Grado or Piran. Here you will find ample opportunities to enjoy a refreshing swim in the sea and bury your feet in the warm sand. Reward yourself at the end of each cycling day with the culinary delights of the various countries. Add to this a glass of the sun-drenched wine and your cycling tour on the Adriatic Sea is perfect!
Your hotel is located in Mestre, a district of Venice on the mainland. After check-in set off on your cycling tour along the Adriatic Sea to the old town. It is easily accessible by public transport. Go on a discovery tour in La Serenissima. Discover its magnificent squares above all St. Mark's Square, enjoy the sophisticated palazzi as well as the countless canals and bridges.
Andiamo – let's go! Right at the beginning of your trip, you will have to choose one of two routes. The first takes you from the lagoon city to Punta Sabbioni by ferry (not included). Treat yourself to a short break here and enjoy a refreshing swim. Back on your bike, fishing boats and souvenir stalls line your route. Alternatively, you can choose the second route where you cycle through the hinterland. Cycle along the calmly flowing river Sile past the ruins of Torre Caligo to your stage destination of Jesolo or Caorle.
If you have spent the night in Jesolo, cycle past the last fishing huts to the small seaside resort of Caorle. Here you leave the sea behind. With a view of the Julian Alps on the horizon, you continue to cycle inland. Fields and meadows accompany your tour through the quiet hinterland to Portogruaro. The town was built as a river port for Venice it is still worth a visit today. Stroll along the arcades of ancient palaces and visit the traditional markets.
Today you will be heading back towards the sea. The small fishing village of Marano Lagunare is beautifully situated in a lagoon with unique flora and fauna. The inhabitants lived by the sea for thousands of years. Be sure to try the catch of the day in one of the many restaurants located in the village center. Then continue by boat to Aquileia. Visit the Roman excavations on the large open-air site. Depending on where you are staying spend the evening in Aquileia or cycle on to historic Grado. It is also known as the Island of the Sun for good reason. If you want to spend more time on the beach, you can shorten the first part of your bike tour to Latisana by train.
Contrasting landscapes await you on your cycling tour along the Adriatic Sea. You cycle past a barren rocky landscape criss-crossed by caves through the hinterland of Trieste. Once you reach the coast you will be greeted by stark white cliffs rising vertically out of the deep blue sea. Visit the castle in Duino and jump into the refreshing Adriatic Sea at Barcola beach. Enjoy your evening with Austrian architecture, Italian lifestyle and Slovenian cuisine - that's Trieste! If you don't want to cycle that far, you can shorten the stage from Montefalcone to Trieste by train (not included).
Arrivederci Italia – Dober dan Slovenija! Depending on your motivation and fitness level, you can choose one of two routes. Cycle through the Val Rosandra located in the hinterland or take a short boat trip between Trieste and Muggia (not included). From Koper, you cycle along the coast and past numerous small towns such as Izola or Piran. Both of them are famous for their beaches. A visit to the old town and harbor promenade of each town is also worthwhile. Also discover the variety of Istrian cuisine: You must try pršut, boškarin or fritule!
After a few kilometers, you will reach one of the most important nature reserves in Slovenia – the Sečovlje salt pans. In the nature park and its museum, you will learn how sea salt is extracted through natural evaporation. You then cycle through slightly hilly terrain to the famous coastal town of Poreč. Explore the town with its old city walls, the Euphrasian Basilica and the towers from the 15th century. Spend the evening relaxing on one of the many beaches. Refresh yourself in the cool water and watch the sun sink into the sea.
