Our cycling vacation in Luxembourg takes you to the border triangle of Germany, France and Luxembourg. You will not only cycle along the river valleys of the Saar, the Upper Moselle and the Sûre, but you will also enjoy a region that has been inhabited since Roman times. Along varied river landscapes and on well-maintained bike paths you will get to know Roman villas, lofty castles, picturesque wine-growing villages and historic towns. You will start your cycling vacation in Luxembourg in Saarburg. Near Mettlach you will reach the Saar Loop, which is one of the most beautiful natural features of the Saarland. Through the Merziger Land you will reach the Moselle between Perl and Remich. You set course
for the city of Luxembourg, the multifaceted capital of the Grand Duchy of the same name. Through Luxembourg‘s Little Switzerland you reach Echternach, the country‘s oldest city. You follow the Sûre River, which leads you back to the Moselle. The river, lined with countless vines, makes the heart of every wine lover beat faster. But also the Saar with its fine Rieslings is in no way inferior to the quality wines from the Moselle.
Your cycling vacation in Luxembourg begins in Saarburg. The wine town on the Saar impresses with an old town, which is characterized by a 20-meter-high waterfall. Already audible from afar, it was created in the Middle Ages to use water power to drive mill wheels. High above the city towers the ruins of the Saarburg. It is one of the oldest hilltop castles in southwestern Germany. Try a Saar wine, which will put you in the right mood for the days ahead.
The first stage of your cycling vacation in Luxembourg takes you through the Saar Valley to Mettlach. The Saar Loop there is one of the landmarks of the Saarland. The most beautiful view of the loop you have from the vantage point Cloef - the climb is worth it! Through the Merziger Land, known for its countless meadow orchards, you will reach Perl on the Moselle. The town is known for its Roman Villa Borg and the mosaic of Nennig, a district. Stop in one of Perl's many wine taverns and enjoy a regional Elbling or Grauburgunder.
First you follow the Moselle, which forms the national border between Germany and Luxembourg on the section to Remich. Remich is considered the center of Luxembourg's winegrowing and has an old town worth seeing. Equally worth seeing is your destination for the day, the capital of Luxembourg. Whether the Grand Ducal Palace, the Bock Casemates or the modern Philharmonic Hall - the image of the city is characterized by a mix of historical and contemporary buildings and knows how to surprise with picturesque corners and exciting places.
Today, during your cycling vacation in Luxembourg, you will cycle on the so-called Bicycle Path of Echternach. After you leave the city of Luxembourg, the landscape changes. Dense forests and impressive rock formations line your bike path, which is equipped with some inclines. With Echternach you reach the oldest city of Luxembourg. Enjoy the medieval flair of the town located in the middle of the Little Luxembourg Switzerland. Take a walk that will take you through winding streets and past the remains and towers of the old city walls.
On the Sauertal cycle path you first follow the river Sauer along the German-Luxembourg border. In Wasserbillig you will meet the Moselle. You follow it on the Luxembourg side and reach Wormeldange. Sample a sparkling Riesling from the Wormeldinger Koeppchen vineyard before cycling to your destination for the day, Nittel. Situated between dolomite and limestone cliffs, the village is characterized by the cultivation of the Elbling. The Romans already knew how to appreciate the taste of this white wine, which is one of the oldest varieties in the world.
With the vineyards along the Moselle in view, follow its course to Konz. The town at the confluence of the Moselle and Saar rivers is ideal for a stopover. Visit the Roscheider Hof. The open-air museum provides insights into the cultural history of both rivers. The tour continues along the Saar. A detour is worthwhile to Tawern a few kilometers away from the river. The name of the village indicates that Tawern once served as a Roman rest stop. On the Metzenberg (attention: steep ascent!) a Roman temple district was built, which can be visited for free. Back along the Saar, you will return to your starting point in Saarburg.
