This relaxed family cycling holiday in bavaria takes you on quiet paths, away from traffic, through the Franconian Lake District and the Altmühl Valley. The lakes that were once created now look completely natural. Immerse yourself in the waters of the Altmühlsee and Brombachsee lakes, follow in the footsteps of the Romans in Weißenburg and explore the romantic Pappenheim Castle. Far from the coast, you will not only find thermal waters, but also the most beautiful sandy beaches. Bizarre rock formations await you on the Altmühl. And there is always a playground or picnic area within sight. This cycle tour is not just great fun for families, but for anyone looking for a break from the hectic pace of everyday life.
Your journey begins in the middle of the Franconian Lake District, a popular vacation region. The Limes, the Roman border wall, once ran here. The medieval town fortifications, ornate baroque buildings and pretty half-timbered houses tell the long history of Gunzenhausen. The Altmühlsee lake is right on the edge of the town. Why not test the bathing quality for yourself?
Today you will go on a trip all round Brombachsee Lake. There are many playgrounds along the cycle path. Laze around on one of the many sandy beaches or treat yourself to a refreshment in a beer garden. But you won't just be spending your day at the waterside, but right on the water! Enjoy a trip on Europe's biggest passenger Trimaran complete with restaurant and a playboat for children on the deck.
Your cycling holiday continues today along peaceful pathways through woods, fields and meadows to Pleinfeld. From there you cycle along the Swabian Rezat river, towards today's destination. Follow the tracks of the Romans in Weißenburg and explore the winding streets of the historic quarter. Parts of the impressive, mighty city wall are still intact.
From Weißenburg, you cycle along the Altmühl to Pappenheim Castle. The well-known saying "I know my Pappenheimers" refers to the inhabitants of the town, originally meant to praise them for their loyalty. From the castle walls, a fabulous panorama opens up over the Altmühltal valley, through which you cycle to your stage destination, the tranquil town of Wettelsheim just outside Treuchtlingen.
This section is pleasantly short and flat. This leaves you enough time for a relaxing visit to the Treuchtlingen thermal baths or a refreshing dip in the Altmühlsee once you arrive in Gunzenhausen. You follow the Altmühl upstream and can enjoy the tranquillity and picturesque landscape of the valley before you cycle to Gunzenhausen.
