Your cycling and hiking tour along the Moselle begins in Trier, Germany’s oldest city. We recommend arriving early to fully explore what the city has to offer. Founded by the Romans over 2,000 years ago, Trier retains many traces of its ancient heritage. The iconic Porta Nigra, or Black Gate, stands as a striking symbol of the city’s Roman past. It serves as the perfect starting point for a leisurely stroll through the historic centre, where you’ll discover a fascinating blend of ancient ruins and more modern buildings.
The first stage of your cycling and hiking tour along the Moselle takes you to Leiwen. Cycle through scenic vineyards and charming cultural landscapes to Mehring. It is home to the remarkable Villa Rustica. This Roman estate, dates back to the 2nd century. It used to be one of the largest manor houses of the region. The remains of a stunning mosaic, along with reconstructed facades and rooms, offer a fascinating glimpse into the villa's luxurious past.
As the day draws to a close, relax in Leiwen, with a glass of local Riesling vine from the surrounding vineyards.
Your hike leads you to Neumagen-Dhron, Germany's oldest wine-growing village. Here, the Neumagener Weinschiff (wine ship), a replica of a Roman transport vessel, is moored on the banks of the Moselle, serving as a reminder of the area’s ancient Roman heritage. Take a leisurely walk along the Archaeological Trail which connects the village's key Roman sites.
Just a few kilometres into your ride, you’ll reach Piesport, the largest wine-growing community on the Moselle. Here, visit the reconstructed Roman wine press, where ancient winemaking techniques are brought to life. With the imposing Moselloreley rock massif in the distance, continue your ride to Bernkastel-Kues. This charming half-timbered town is renowned for its picturesque old town and inviting wine taverns. Be sure to sample a white wine from the prestigious Bernkasteler Doctor vineyard before cycling at a relaxed pace to your destination for the day, Traben-Trarbach. Upon arrival, indulge in a wine tasting (included), a perfect way to conclude your day.
Following the winding Moselle, lined with endless vineyards, you'll reach the charming town of Zell, nestled at the next bend in the river. With over four million vines, Zell is one of Germany’s largest wine-growing communities. The renowned Schwarze Katz vineyard is particularly famous, producing world-class wines that are highly prized internationally.
After exploring the steepest vineyard in Europe near Bremm, your journey takes you to Beilstein, known for its picturesque Metternich Castle. From here, a Moselle boat cruise (included) will transport you to Cochem, where the striking Imperial Castle dominates the skyline, offering a spectacular view of the town below.
On today’s stage of your cycling and hiking tour along the Moselle, you’ll first cycle to Treis-Karden, home to the Mosel Cathedral, one of the most important churches between Trier and Koblenz. Just a short distance away, slightly off the Moselle, lies the stunning Eltz Castle. Considered one of the most beautiful and impressive castles in Germany, Eltz offers a fascinating journey through history. Explore the Knights' Hall and admire a collection of invaluable artworks spanning several centuries.
Back on the Moselle cycling path, continue your ride through picturesque wine villages, eventually reaching Winningen. This charming town, surrounded by steep slopes and terraced vineyards, provides a perfect backdrop to conclude your day’s ride.
Today, your cycling and hiking tour along the Moselle leads you to Koblenz. Just a short distance from Winningen, you’ll pass by Witches' Hill, where a memorial stone commemorates the tragic events of witch trials and burnings that took place in the 17th century. From here, you’ll continue through rolling vineyards and lush meadows towards your destination.
Koblenz, located at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers, offers a wealth of historical and cultural sights.
