During this circular tour, you will not only get to know lively half-timbered towns with highly interesting history. You will also cycle through untouched, almost wild nature. The Fulda and Werra rivers meander through beautiful river valleys and low mountain ranges in the north of Hesse, taking you on a journey that will leave a lasting impression. Along the way, you will cross the Fulda by cable car. One highlight is certainly the Documenta city of Kassel. You could stay here for days just to explore the magnificent museum landscape and the World Heritage Site Bergpark Kassel Wilhelmshöhe. But Rotenburg an der Fulda, the Bartenwetzer town of Melsungen and the cherry town of Witzenhausen are also beautiful places to visit. The start and finish is marked by the beautiful town of Hann. Münden, whose charming old town is dotted with historic buildings adorned with richly decorated flat carvings. This is where the Werra and Fulda rivers meet and flow northwards together as the Weser. Alexander von Humboldt is said to have described the city of three rivers as „one of the seven most beautifully situated cities in the world“.

The park features remarkable attractions, including the grand castle, the Löwenburg, and its enchanting baroque trick fountains.
Kassel also boasts a vibrant cultural scene. In addition to the renowned documenta art exhibition, a visit to the Grimmwelt museum is highly recommended. The Brothers Grimm spent over thirty years in Kassel, from 1798 to 1841, and their legacy is celebrated here. Enjoy your exploration of this culturally rich city!
Leaving Kassel, you’ll pedal leisurely through the picturesque Fulda floodplains. Follow the gentle curves of the Fulda River, shaped by the low mountain ranges on either side. This stage offers an easy cycling experience, leading you to the enchanting half-timbered town of Melsungen.
As you arrive, be sure to explore the historic old stone bridge, where the Melsungen forest workers, known as the Bartenwetzer, would sharpen their axes and hatchets in the soft sandstone before heading into the woods each morning. Then take some time to relax in the city's cozy squares, adorned with lovingly restored half-timbered houses that date back 300 to 400 years. Visit he Landgrave's Castle, built in the late Weser Renaissance style or the Romanesque-Gothic town church. Just enjoy your time in this fairy tale setting!
Continue your journey through the scenic low mountain range and river landscape along the Fulda. This stage of the cycle tour will be highly diverse and engaging. One of today's highlights is the unique cyclist's cable car near Beiseförth. Here you can propel yourself across the Fulda River in a transport basket, adding an adventurous twist to your ride.
Next, you'll arrive in Rotenburg an der Fulda located at the former boarder between East and West Germany. Here remnants of the medieval town wall from the 12th and 13th centuries, complete with two round towers, can still be admired. Don’t miss the picturesque Brotgasse and the row of delightful half-timbered houses by the Fulda Bridge, which further enhance the town's historical charm. Enjoy the rich history and stunning scenery as you cycle through this captivating region!
Your journey continues through the enchanting shallow mountain range, featuring an altitude difference of approximately 250 meters between the Fulda and Werra rivers. If you prefer, you can also cover this distance by train (not included).Make sure to stop in the charming climatic health resort of Sontra, known as the "mountain and Hansel town." The medieval town center is a delight, showcasing numerous listed half-timbered houses and the impressive ruins of Boyneburg Castle, both of which are definitely worth exploring.
Eschwege, located directly on the banks of the Werra is a true gem. The town's picturesque half-timbered buildings are richly ornamented and beautifully adorned. If you're in the mood for some recreation, the nearby Werratalsee lake offers opportunities for swimming, canoeing, surfing, and sailing. As you approach the quaint town of Witzenhausen, you'll discover a region renowned for its cherry orchards, which burst into vibrant bloom with approximately 150,000 cherry trees each spring, adding a unique charm to the landscape.
In Witzenhausen, explore the picturesque town center, where you’ll find an array of delightful half-timbered houses, the historic Diebesturm tower, remnants of the old town wall, the elegant Renaissance town hall, and St. Michael's Chapel.
The short stretch from Witzenhausen to Hann. Münden is considered one of the most scenic segments of the Werra cycle route. This route offers lovely views of the river as it heads northwest. Enjoy the beauty and tranquility of this enchanting area!
After breakfast, your cycle tour along the Werra and Fulda rivers concludes. Before you depart, take a moment to visit the Weserstein, situated on Tanzwerder Island, a picturesque peninsula between the Werra and Fulda rivers. This stone marks the point where "the Werra and Fulda kiss," symbolizing the merging of the two rivers that form the Weser.
