Cycle through the vast plains of the Pos, passing through cozy villages and historic towns such as Brisighella and Ravenna. Known for its rich culture, Florence is the crowning glory of your cycle tour. You will spend the majority of your stages on flat farm tracks and side roads. Short climbs await you towards the end of your cycle tour from Venice to Florence. Reward yourself with the culinary delights of traditional Italian cuisine. Sample the wide range of sun-kissed wines from each region.
Your starting point of Mestre, part of the city of Venice, is located on the mainland, not far from the Venice lagoon. Once you have checked into your hotel, you are ready to go. The old town of Venice is built on 118 islands. After taking part in a small grappa tasting not far from St. Mark's Square, you go on a discovery tour of this unique city. Marvel at the magnificent squares, sophisticated palazzi, countless canals and bridges. Take a vaporetto, a type of water bus, or one of the many gondolas to experience the city from the water.
In the morning you will receive a tour information briefing. Your cycle tour from Venice to Florence begins! You cross the Ponte della Libertà and take the ferry (not included) to the Lido di Venezia, a narrow strip of sand that separates the lagoon from the sea. We cycle via Pellestrina to Chioggia and Sottomarina. The island town of Chioggia is often referred to as Little Venice, but is also an important fishing port. Right next door is the popular seaside resort of Sottomarina with its miles of sandy beach.
Still by the sea in the morning, already in the hinterland in the evening. Today you first cross the Adige. Through fertile fields and idyllic villages, you reach Adria. The charming small town not far from the Po welcomes you with narrow streets and cozy cafés. If you still have time, take a detour to the banks of the mighty Po.
Along the Po di Goro, a branch of the Po, you reach the Emilia Romagna region today. Before you reach today's destination on the cycle tour from Venice to Florence, you will pass through the Delta del Po nature park, where you can marvel at more than just flamingos. Comacchio, once founded on 13 lagoon islands, shines with its landmark, the Ponte Trepponti. Not far away, a number of characterful seaside resorts await you on the Adriatic coast. A cool-off is guaranteed!
Your cycle stage today takes you past the Valli di Comacchio lagoon landscape and a stretch of the Adriatic coast to Ravenna. The mosaic art the city is famous for is reflected in numerous centuries-old buildings. Visit the church of San Vitale. Rather unadorned on the outside, it presents itself on the inside with magnificent mosaics from the 6th century. The Basilica Sant'Apollinare in Classe, just outside the city center, is also worth a visit. Ravenna's old town is closed to cars, ideal for discovering the city's other sights in a relaxed manner.
On today's stage of your cycle tour from Venice to Florence, the landscape changes. From the foothills of the Po Valley, you cycle to Brisighella at the foot of the Apennines. Situated between vineyards and orchards, you reach Faenza, a picturesque little town. Ceramic art has been traditionally practiced here for centuries. Historical examples can be seen in the International Ceramics Museum. The backdrop of tranquil Brisighella can be seen from afar. The Rocca Manfrediana fortress, the pilgrimage church and the Torre dell'Oroglogio tower over the town.
Today you travel by train from Brisighella to Borgo San Lorenzo. Welcome to Tuscany! After two short climbs, you cycle towards Florence. The capital of Tuscany is considered the cradle of the Renaissance. Stroll through the Piazza della Signoria, pay a visit to the world-famous Uffizi Gallery and enjoy Italian cuisine in one of the many trattorias.
