The Vltava Cycle Route is not a typical river cycle route, but an exciting journey of discovery through the hilly landscape of Bohemia. Do you already have Bedřich Smetana's Vltava melody in your head? The Czech composer described the course of the Vltava in music. You follow the varied river by bike. You start your tour on the Vltava Cycle Route in the Golden City of Prague. There is hardly a more exciting city in Europe than the dynamic Czech capital with its old European, romantic flair! Along the Bohemian lifeline, you will encounter mystical forests, vast reservoirs, old monasteries, romantic castles and defiant fortresses. Your overnight stops, especially Český Krumlov, will delight you with their beautiful historical buildings from different eras. Try the specialties of the hearty Bohemian cuisine and treat yourself to an original Budweiser beer! After a week of cycling through the hilly landscape of the Czech Republic and Upper Austria, the Three Rivers City of Passau marks the end of your cycle tour on the Vltava Cycle Route. The breathtaking views will more than make up for the challenging stages, during which you will have to master one or two climbs.

Today, you’ll cross the lush, deep green expanse of the Bohemian Forest along the Vltava Cycle Route. As you approach Milešov, the expansive Vltava Reservoir comes into view, and soon you’ll reach Orlík. Perched high above the river on a rocky spur, Orlík Castle dominates the landscape, offering a dramatic sight from afar.

A few kilometers further, you’ll encounter Zvíkov Castle, an impressive fortress located at the confluence of the Vltava and Otava rivers. Due to its strategic position on a promontory, it was one of the most formidable and difficult castles to conquer during the Middle Ages.

Your destination for the day is the charming town of Písek, nestled on the gold-rich Otava River. In Písek, be sure to visit the historic Gothic stone bridge, the oldest of its kind in the Czech Republic, a testament to the town’s rich medieval heritage.

Take your time to wander through the magnificent park surrounding the castle and explore the splendid building itself. Originally a royal castle, Hluboká was reconstructed in the neo-Gothic style, inspired by none other than Windsor Castle.
Continuing along the Vltava, you’ll arrive in České Budějovice (Budweis), the heart of South Bohemia. Known worldwide for its iconic beer, the city also boasts an extensive market square, flanked by picturesque buildings from the Gothic and Renaissance periods.
