Between the Golden City of Prague and Dresden, nicknamed the Florence of the Elbe, you cycle along the Elbe Cycle Route through the rural Bohemian hills and the bizarre formations of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. First you follow the Vltava from Prague to Mělník, where the Czech Republic's longest river flows into the Elbe. The atmosphere in the vibrant and culturally historic cities at the beginning and end of your trip forms the ideal contrast to your cycle tour, which takes you through impressive landscapes and to numerous baroque towns and castles. The cycle tour along the Elbe from Prague to Dresden could not be more varied.
Enjoy the international flair of the Golden City. Simply wander through the streets and be delighted by the Art Nouveau architecture style. The castle in Prague and Wenceslas Square give you a glimpse of styles from older as well as from more modern eras of history. A large number of museums are waiting to be explored. Reserved rental bicycles are parked at the hotel ready for you.
The city's most well-known symbol is without doubt Charles Bridge, which leads you into the old town. You can devote your attention to the world famous architectural ensemble, or try exploring Kafka's trails in the city, or enjoy a glass of beer in one of the local taverns in the old town. Don't forget to be close to the City Hall at noon and see the Astronomical Clock in action.
This section follows the Elbe Cycle Route along the Vltava river, which inspired Smetana to a well-known piece of music. The rural scenes when you leave Prague are in sharp contrast to the cosmopolitan city. The pretty town of Mělník is where the Vltava and Elbe rivers merge. It is also significant in terms of the Bohemian wine-growing trade.
Your cycle tour from Prague to Dresden continues along the gentle bends of the Elbe. In the impressive city fortress of Theresienstadt, you are suddenly confronted with the oppressive past of the Second World War. In Leitmeritz, an overnight stay worth seeing, you can let the impressions of the day sink in. Colorful Renaissance buildings next to Baroque buildings and the Gothic city wall make the town unique.
Today you follow the Elbe Cycle Route into the hilly Bohemian countryside. At Ústí nad Labem the path takes you up an incline to Střekov Castle. Don’t be perturbed by the climb, you will be rewarded at the top with wonderful views over the Elbe valley. Particularly worthy of mention is the English Garden at Velké Březno Castle and the Baroque Gardens at Děčín Castle.
Today’s section is a connection between the twinned towns of Děčín and Pirna. Soon after you leave Děčín, the Elbe begins its spectacular drop through the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. Erosion has caused the soft Elbe Sandstone to weather into all kinds of fantastic shapes. The view on the Elbe valley from the Königstein Fortress is truly breathtaking. Enjoy a walk through Pirna's old town with its painted facades.
On your way to Dresden you are going to pass Castle Pillnitz, and the old Loschwitz bridge. During the trip you can enjoy the magnificent view of the Elbe valley. Afterwards you have a lot of time to explore Dresden, since the route for today is very short. Next to the historic buildings such as Zwinger, Opera and the rebuilt Frauenkirche (Church of our Lady), the neighbourhood Neustadt is known for Dresden's modern and youth culture.
