The cycle tour along the Oder takes you from Frankfurt an der Oder to the sunny island of Usedom. Following the Oder-Neisse Cycle Route, you will explore the beautiful landscapes of North-Eastern Germany – many of which are protected. The first stages take you close to the river through the Oderbruch, a landscape full of character, and the Lower Oder Valley National Park with its species-rich flora and fauna. The cycle tour then leaves the Oder and leads through slightly hilly and wooded landscapes to the Szczecin Lagoon. On the Polish side of the lagoon, the Oder flows into the Baltic Sea. Unlike the Oder, your journey does not end at the lagoon. Take the ferry to the sunny island of Usedom. The last stage takes you along the beautiful island coast to your hotel. You can plan the last day of your cycle tour along the Oder as you wish. So you can enjoy the sandy beaches and imperial resorts of Usedom to the full.
Frankfurt an der Oder was once a vital trading and Hanseatic city on both sides of the Oder River. St. Mary's Church and the historic town hall still stand as impressive reminders of the city's former wealth. After World War II, the city was divided, and today Frankfurt is a European twin city with the Polish town of Słubice. The lively border traffic across the city bridge highlights the ongoing connection between the two towns. While exploring the city, don't miss a short detour to visit its sister city. If you arrive early, you can cycle along a 20-kilometre route tracing the footsteps of Frankfurt's most famous son, the poet Heinrich von Kleist, and also get acquainted with the city that marks the starting point of your Oder cycle tour.
Leaving Frankfurt behind, you cycle through the picturesque Oder meadows to the north of the city, where smaller climbs await. From the ridge near Lebus, you can enjoy a breathtaking view over the Oder Valley. Continuing on, you enter the fascinating landscape of the Oderbruch, a former inland delta that was drained by Prussian King Frederick II. The result is a fertile cultural landscape, still dominated by wide meadows and fields. Along the way, you'll find yourself cycling through seemingly endless avenues, surrounded by tranquil, expansive views. Your overnight stay will be in either Groß Neuendorf or Altlewin, two charming villages located on the edge of the Oderbruch.
On well-maintained cycle paths, your journey continues through the stunning Oder landscape. Leaving the Oderbruch behind, you cycle into the Uckermark region, where you’ll be immersed in the unique flora and fauna of the Lower Oder Valley National Park, Germany’s only floodplain national park. This rich floodplain landscape serves as a paradise for water birds, and during the spring and autumn, thousands of migratory birds can be observed. Make a stop at Stolpe Castle and ascend the Grützpott, which is likely the most formidable castle strongholds within Germany. From the top, you’ll be rewarded with a magnificent panoramic view of the surrounding region.
The third stage of your cycle tour takes you along the Oder River for the first part of the day. After passing the small, fortified town of Gartz, the cycle path veers away from the river, which continues its course into Poland. You’ll then ride through a densely wooded, gently hilly landscape. The villages in this sparsely populated region have names that reflect their Slavic origins. Along the way, several lakes provide perfect spots for a refreshing swim. At the end of the stage, the reconstructed castle tower of Löcknitz Castle offers a stunning view over the village and the picturesque Randow Valley.
Today, your cycle journey takes you up and down through the scenic landscapes of Western Pomerania, past vibrant fields and wide, lush meadows. You’ll often pass through enchanting woodlands, and soon, the fresh scent of the sea will greet you. Make a stop at Nowe Warpno Lake, where a large observation tower offers a spectacular view of the surrounding area. From here, the route continues through the Nature Park Am Stettiner Haff, following the pristine coastline. Enjoy a relaxing break on the beach before cycling the final stretch to the formerly Swedish fishing town of Ueckermünde. In the evening, take a leisurely stroll through the lovingly restored old town and soak in the maritime atmosphere at the town harbour.
You begin the day by cycling the first few kilometers to Kamp, where you will take the ferry to Karnin on the Island of Usedom. Not far from the village is the Golm hill, the highest point on the island, offering a breathtaking view that stretches all the way to Świnoujście in neighboring Poland. Soon, you will arrive at the magnificent imperial seaside resorts of Ahlbeck, Bansin, and Heringsdorf, which still retain their aristocratic charm and grandeur. Continuing your ride, you’ll cycle through sparse forests and alongside the wide, sandy beaches of the Baltic Sea. The last two nights of your Oder cycle tour will be spent on the idyllic Island of Usedom.
Today, the itinerary on Usedom is entirely at your leisure. You can explore the sun-drenched island on a scenic round trip by bike. There’s much to discover: idyllic harbors, picturesque inland lakes, and 40 kilometers of fine, white sandy beaches. Alternatively, spend the day unwinding in one of the fashionable seaside resorts. Take a leisurely stroll along the promenades, walk across the piers, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere in the island's many cafés and restaurants. For the ultimate relaxation, nothing beats a day at the beach—soak up the warm sunshine and refresh yourself in the cool, inviting waters of the Baltic Sea.
