This easy cycle tour in Catalonia is straight out of a picture book. A varied landscape between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean awaits you. You start the cycle tour in Catalonia in the picturesque foothills of the Pyrenees, one of the greenest landscapes in Spain. The Garrotxa nature park is full of oaks, cork oaks, holm oaks and beeches and is known throughout Spain for its 40 volcanoes. All the volcanoes are considered inactive but not extinct. You follow a former railroad line that has been converted into a cycle path, a so-called Vía Verde, from Olot first to Girona. You will immediately fall in love with this charming medieval town. Colorful houses are reflected in the river Onyar, which separates the old town from the new town. Scenes for the successful TV series Game of Thrones or the film The Perfume were filmed here. Soon you will have reached the Costa Brava, and with it the Mediterranean. Here, wild rocky bays alternate with sandy beaches. The stages are short and not too strenuous, so you can fully enjoy life in the autonomous region of Catalonia. The Catalan cuisine and, above all, the wines round off this cycle tour in Catalonia in a tasty way.
The small town of Olot is the starting point for your cycle tour in Catalonia, close to the Garrotxa Natural Park, one of the most important volcanic landscapes on the Iberian Peninsula. There are even some extinct volcanoes in the middle of the city. Olot also has a lot to offer in other respects. In the Garrotxa Museum, you can learn about the city's heyday, when it became wealthy thanks to the production of colorful fabrics called Indianas. Beautiful manor houses, pretty squares and venerable churches will delight you on your tour of the city.
On the second day of the cycle tour in Catalonia, you finally get on your bike and explore the area around Olot. At the foot of the snow-covered Pyrenees, between gnarled cork oak and pine groves, you cycle through the volcanic landscape of Garrotxa. The scent of cistus, eucalyptus and rosemary is constantly in your nose. You will come across Romanesque churches, old farms and overgrown craters. After this short day's stage, there is still time to explore the landmark of the city of Olot. Climb the green volcano Montsacopa. The historic Carlist Towers, which lie on the edge of the crater, offer spectacular views over the Garrotxa landscape and the Canigó mountains.
You leave Olot and cycle along a former narrow-gauge railroad line, also known as Vía Verde del Carrilet, through beautiful forests. Rail services between Olot and Girona were discontinued in 1969. Information boards along the route tell of the planning, construction and closure. Some of the old stations have been restored and are now home to restaurants. The day's destination is Les Planes d'Hostoles. The municipality borders the Garrotxa Natural Park and played a central role in one of the most important chapters of the Peasants' Wars. Two of the castles that served as bastions during the Peasants' Wars can still be visited today.
You stay on the Vía Verde del Carrilet route and quickly reach the four-river city of Girona. Get a first impression and stroll around the walkable city wall. The colorful city of Girona lies at your feet, with the snow-capped peaks of the Pyrenees in the distance. In the Game of Thrones series, Girona became the Free City of Braavos. The orange-red Eiffel Bridge, which was designed by Gustave Eiffel and is actually reminiscent of the Eiffel Tower, is popular with tourists. However, the city's dominant building is the cathedral. Walking along cobblestones, stone walls decorated with flowering plants and small stores, you will soon feel like you have stepped back in time. Girona is a real gem!
The longest stage of your cycle tour in Catalonia is coming up. It once again takes you along the disused railroad line, the Vías Verdes. Your destination this time is Sant Feliu de Guíxols, which lies in a beautiful bay on the Costa Brava. The village used to make a living from fishing and the cork industry. Today it is a popular vacation destination. Stroll along the promenade with pine and plane trees or the Ramblas. The nostalgic Plaça del Mercat market hall and the remaining buildings of the Sant Feliu monastery are also well worth a visit. Of course, a leisurely afternoon on the beautiful sandy beach is also a good idea.
Explore the surrounding area by bike, look for quiet bays away from the hustle and bustle or take advantage of the wide range of water sports on offer in Sant Feliu. The good water quality on the Costa Brava has been awarded the Blue Flag in many places. If you haven't cycled enough, we recommend a trip to the idyllic fishing village of Tossa de Mar along the most spectacular coastal road in Catalonia. But beware: this is a somewhat more challenging stage. No matter what you choose: Enjoying the last day of your cycle tour in Catalonia to the full should not be difficult.
