On our cycle tour around Ærø you will explore the Danish island world with us. The blue sea, white beaches, small bays, sailboats on the horizon, as well as small and large islands - the area between the peninsula Helnaes in the west, the island Ærø, Langeland and the small harbour town Lundeborg is called the Danish South Sea for a reason. You will spend your nights in the port towns of Fåborg and Svendborg, ideal places to explore during your cycling tour around Ærø. You will not only get to know the island of Ærø itself, but also the idyllic islands of Lyø, Avernakø, Skarø, Drejø, and Tåsinge. As you cycle through a variety of lush green landscapes, you can experience the diverse wildlife and discover a number of historical buildings along the way. Our cycle tour around Ærø is ideal for leaving everyday life behind, enjoying the view of the wide open sea and getting to know one of Denmark's most beautiful regions in a relaxing way.
The cosy harbour town of Fåborg is the starting point of your cycle tour around Ærø. After arriving at the hotel you should grab your bike and explore the historic district. Vesterport is one of the few remaining town gates in Denmark, it was a part of the town fortifications built in the Middle Ages. The town's landmark is the Klokketårnet. Climb the bell tower and enjoy the beautiful view of Fåborg and the sea. The fountain Ymerbrønd is also worth having a look at. The bronze sculpture shows the Nordic mythologies history of creation in a special way.
Today we are going to the South Funen Archipelago! Here you get to know the islands of Lyø and Avernakø. First you head to Lyø by ferry (not included). Then you cycle to Lyø By, where you can enjoy its ponds and half-timbered houses, as well as have a look at the Klokkesten. The bell stone dates back to the Neolithic Age and can be sounded by striking it with a rock. After taking the ferry (not included) again you arrive in Avernakø. The two-part island is just as charming and idyllic as Lyø. Both islands are characterised by their beautiful nature and unique silence – ideal for dreaming and relaxing. If you don't want to visit either of the islands you can also arrange your day differently.
The cycling day starts with a ferry trip (included) to the picturesque island of Ærø. You will be able to see the lighthouse of Skjoldnæs from afar. Visit the hunting lodge Søbygaard, the cliffs of Voderup Klint and the seafaring town Marstal on your tour around the island. Before you board the ferry to Svendborg in the charming harbour town of Ærøskøbing, you should try the island's speciality: Løvtens Paa'kar – airy pancakes. Once you have arrived in Svendborg, go on a long walk through the historic district and to the harbour with its beautiful historic wooden ships.
From Svendborg you will once again head to the South Funen Archipelago. The ferry (included) will take you to Skarø. The island offers a unique nature experience with its beach meadows, dunes, and sandy reefs. You can experience the unique atmosphere of the island, which is only about two km² in size, by bike or simply on foot. Your next destination is Drejø. The island is inhabited by rare white fallow deer. If you are lucky, you may spot these shy animals on a walk. On your way back to Svendborg you can enjoy the mild sea breezes blowing around you.
On today's trip around Ærø you cycle along the coast until you reach Lundeborg. On your way there you can take a break at the beach in Skårupøre or Elsehoved – don't forget your swimming trunks! The landmark of Lundeborg is the Packhaus near the idyllic harbour. After cycling back to Svendborg, you can quickly reach the island of Tåsinge via the Svendborgsund Bridge. Valdemars Slot by the sea is particularly worth seeing. The large park with its tall old trees is the perfect place for a picnic.
The last part of your cycle tour around Ærø will take you back to Fåborg along the Svendborg Sound. You will be cycling through partly hilly terrain a little off the coast. Extend today's tour by a few kilometres with an excursion to the Funen Alps. The lovingly named hills north of Fåborg are only 128 metres high at their highest point. They offer you unspoilt nature and magnificent views of the surroundings and the archipelago. If you like it a little flatter, you can visit Horne to the west of the town. Horne Church is one of the most unusual places of worship in Denmark.
