The cycle tour on Bornholm offers pure vacation feeling! You cycle through picture-book Scandinavian landscapes and get to know authentic island life. Bornholm is a true cycling paradise. Hardly any traffic, over 150 kilometers of well-developed cycle paths and impressive coastal landscapes such as fine, bright sandy beaches, impressive rock formations such as Jons Kapel or Helligdomsklipperne. The stages of the cycle tour on Bornholm are designed so that there is plenty of time to relax on the beach and explore the island's picturesque little villages. An added bonus: Bornholm boasts the most hours of sunshine in Denmark!
In Sassnitz-Mukran, you board the ferry to Bornholm with your luggage (and your own bikes). At the port of Rønne, you will be greeted by your local tour guide, who will take your luggage. You can then continue to your hotel in Rønne, literally without any baggage. If you have booked rental bikes, they will be waiting for you at the hotel. Use your day of arrival to explore the island's capital and take your first dip in the Baltic Sea at one of the beaches near the town. Stroll through the alleyways of the old town. Rønne's lively center is the market square Store Torv. It is not only on market days that holidaymakers and locals meet here in one of the many cafés or for shopping.
From Rønne, the route of the cycle tour on Bornholm leads through Hasle and past small fishing villages. Deep ravines alternate with breathtaking views of the coast. On a clear day, the Swedish mainland can be seen on the horizon. Jons Kapel, whose steep and rugged cliffs fall vertically into the sea, is steeped in legend. At the northern tip of Bornholm, the imposing medieval fortress of Hammershus sits enthroned on a steep cliff. Experience Bornholm's history up close on a tour of the largest castle ruins in Northern Europe! Today you will spend the night either in the idyllic harbour town of Allinge or in the small beach town of Sandkås.
Today you will explore the northern tip of Bornholm with the Hammerknuden nature reserve. Hammerknuden translates to hammer-shaped granite rock. Here you have the opportunity to leave your bike and hike through the beautiful nature. You will come across traces of granite mining, such as the opal lake. Enjoy the view from the Hammer Odde Lighthouse. At the foot of Hammerknuden, the beach at Sandvig beckons. Feel the fine sand between your toes, relax in the sun and refresh yourself with a dip in the Baltic Sea.
The third stage of your cycle tour on Bornholm runs along the north-east coast of the island. Your route takes you past the famous Helligdomsklipperne. They are probably the most impressive rock formation on the entire island. The Bornholm Art Museum, beautifully situated on the cliffs, is well worth a visit. Gudhjem is about halfway along the route. Here you should try the specialty Sol over Gudhjem, named after the town, a smørrebrød with herring, onions and raw egg yolk. The best place to try it is in one of the traditional smokehouses. Cycle on to Svaneke. The town with its well-preserved half-timbered houses built on rock is one of the most beautiful small towns in Denmark. Overnight stay in Svaneke or Balka.
Today's cycle tour takes you to the center of the island. In the artists' village of Østerlars, a visit to the largest and oldest of Bornholm's four round churches is a must. These churches look almost like fortresses. In the past, they were used for the defense and protection of the citizens. The tour continues through the Almindigen forest. Here, too, you will encounter the ruins of Gamleborg and Lilleborg castles, evidence of Bornholm's martial past. Rytterknægten lies in the middle of the forest. The highest point on Bornholm is adorned with a lookout tower from which you can enjoy a fantastic panoramic view.
First you cycle along the coast to the harbour town of Nexø. From Nexø, the cycle tour leads inland through wide meadows and fields to Aakirkeby. Again and again you will have a view of Dueodde, the southern tip of Bornholm. Aakirkeby is home to one of the oldest churches on the island: Aa Kirke from the 12th century. The NaturBornholm Center is also worth a visit. This interactive museum provides interesting facts about the island's unique nature. The rest of the route runs partly along a disused railroad line past Nylar's round church to Rønne.
