A bike tour from Lübeck to Stralsund means seemingly endless sandy beaches, relaxing in a beach chair, enchanting stretches of coastline, untouched nature and historic Hanseatic towns. Wonderful, isn't it? You start this 11-day trip in Lübeck. Known for the Holsten Gate and delicious marzipan, the city on the River Trave is the perfect place to get in the mood for the days ahead on your bike. On this cycling vacation, you will cross the border from Schleswig-Holstein to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern without noticing. Mostly not far from the Baltic Sea coast, the route continues to the Baltic seaside resort of Boltenhagen, the Hanseatic town of Wismar and the island of Poel. In Kühlungsborn and Warnemünde, you can enjoy the dreamlike flair of beautiful beaches and experience idyllic moments and undisturbed views of the sea on the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula. The destination of your bike tour from Lübeck to Stralsund is the time-honored Hanseatic city of Stralsund.
Marzipan, the Hanseatic League and the Holsten Gate – the diverse city of Lübeck is the ideal starting point for your bike tour from Lübeck to Stralsund. Founded in the 12th century, Lübeck quickly developed into an important trading center and established itself as the leading trading power on the Baltic Sea for several hundred years. The old town island in particular, with its countless brick houses, still has a tangible feel of that time. From the 108-metre-high tower of St. Peter's Church, you have a wonderful view of the city, even as far as the Baltic Sea on a clear day.
Today you have the opportunity to get to know Lübeck even better. Visit the five Gothic brick churches, with Lübeck Cathedral standing out in particular with its two towers. Just a few minutes' walk away, you will discover the impressive Holsten Gate, a remnant of the former city fortifications and landmark of the city. Do you fancy the sea and the beach? Then hop on your bike and head to Travemünde. The seaside resort north of Lübeck is ideal for taking a deep breath and enjoying the sun on the miles of beach.
Your day begins with a 1.5-hour cruise (included) on the River Trave, which takes you from Lübeck to Travemünde. The proud four-masted barque Passat is moored here. A ferry then takes you to Priwall (not included). You reach the village of Hohen Schönberg through the Brooker Wald nature reserve. A few kilometers further on is the Baltic seaside resort of Boltenhagen, which boasts a sandy beach almost five kilometers long.
Biking mostly along the Baltic Sea coast, you will reach the old Hanseatic city of Wismar. Situated in a bay, the city was probably founded at the beginning of the 13th century and developed into an important city in the Hanseatic League alongside Lübeck and Rostock. Architectural evidence of this period can still be found in many corners of the city. Wismar's landmark is the Water Art. The pavilion-like, free-standing building was once used to supply drinking water and is located on the market square, one of the largest in Germany.
Take the opportunity to visit the island of Poel off the coast of Wismar right at the start of today's stage of your bike tour from Lübeck to Stralsund. Take the ferry (included) to the small island. Alternatively, you can cycle to Kühlungsborn not far from the Baltic Sea coast.
Look forward to sun, beach and sea today! Organize the day according to your wishes. Kühlungsborn has miles of sandy beaches that invite you to sunbathe, collect shells and build sandcastles. Or how about a walk along the beach promenade and to the pier?
From Kühlungsborn, you cycle mostly along the Baltic Sea coast towards Warnemünde. A detour to the ghost forest near Nienhagen is worthwhile on the way. Mighty old beech trees and gnarled shrubs give the impression that you are in a magical fairytale forest. In Warnemünde, take the ferry (not included) to Hohe Düne. Continue to the picturesque Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula, which boasts idyllic villages and romantic bays. You will spend the night in Wustrow or Ahrenshoop.
You will spend today's day of your bike tour from Lübeck to Stralsund on the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula. On the way to your overnight stay in Zingst, take a short break for a walk along the Darß primeval forest and visit the Darß Museum in Prerow to find out more about the peninsula's maritime culture. Once you arrive in Zingst, head to the beach. Treat yourself to a long sunbath and an ice cream or pick up the ball for a game of beach volleyball.
Today is also a great day out on Zingster beach. Enjoy the sweeping views of the Baltic Sea, the sound of the waves and listen to the cries of the seagulls. If you feel like getting some exercise, pay a visit to the 270-metre-long Zingster pier. If you want to spend some time on your bike today, we recommend a trip to the Hohe Düne viewing platform in the east of the peninsula. From here, you have a wonderful view of the pristine northern beach.
Today you turn your back on the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula, reach the mainland via the Meiningen Bridge and shortly afterwards the Vineta town of Barth. Not far from the Baltic coast, you cycle to your destination of Stralsund. Mighty brick churches and town houses in the old town tell of Stralsund's glorious times, which the city on the Strelasund experienced during the Hanseatic League. At the harbor, you have the opportunity to take a look at the Gorch Fock training sailing ship and immerse yourself in the world of the Baltic and North Sea at the Ozeaneum.
