The destination of your bike tour from Lübeck to Stralsund is the time-honored Hanseatic city of Stralsund.
Marzipan, the Hanseatic League, and the iconic Holsten Gate – the vibrant city of Lübeck is the perfect starting point for your bike tour from Lübeck to Stralsund. Founded in the 12th century, Lübeck swiftly became a key trading hub and established itself as the dominant maritime power in the Baltic Sea. The historic old town island, with its myriad of brick houses, offers a palpable sense of its history. For a stunning panoramic view of the city, head up the 108-metre-high tower of St. Peter's Church, where, on a clear day, you can glimpse the Baltic Sea in the distance.
Today, take the opportunity to explore Lübeck extensively. Visit the five stunning Gothic brick churches, with Lübeck Cathedral standing out for its striking twin towers. Just a short walk away, you’ll find the impressive Holsten Gate, a remnant of the city's former fortifications and a true symbol of Lübeck. Craving the sea and a beach day? Hop on your bike and head to Travemünde. This charming seaside resort, located north of Lübeck, is perfect for a refreshing breath of sea air and relaxing in the sun along its expansive sandy beaches.
Your day begins with a relaxing 1.5-hour cruise (included) along the River Trave, taking you from Lübeck to Travemünde. Here, you'll find the majestic four-masted barque Passat moored in the harbour. From Travemünde, a ferry (not included) will take you across to Priwall. Continuing your journey, you cycle through the peaceful Brooker Wald nature reserve towards the village of Hohen Schönberg. A few kilometres further, you’ll arrive at the Baltic seaside resort of Boltenhagen, renowned for its nearly five-kilometre-long sandy beach, perfect for a scenic break or an extensive stroll along the coast.
Cycling primarily along the Baltic Sea coast, you will reach the historic Hanseatic city of Wismar. Likely founded in the early 13th century, Wismar quickly became a key city in the Hanseatic League, alongside Lübeck and Rostock. Evidence of this prosperous era is still visible throughout the city, with architectural gems scattered in various corners. Wismar’s iconic landmark is the Water Art, a pavilion-like, free-standing structure that once supplied drinking water to the city. Located in the market square, one of the largest in Germany, it remains a striking reminder of the city’s rich history.
At the start of today’s stage of your bike tour from Lübeck to Stralsund, take the opportunity to visit the island of Poel, located just off the coast of Wismar. Hop on the ferry (included) for a pleasant crossing to this charming island. Alternatively, if you prefer to stay along the coast, you can cycle directly to Kühlungsborn, a picturesque town situated near the Baltic Sea. Both options offer stunning views and a chance to experience the natural beauty of the region.
Today, look forward to a relaxing day of sun, beach, and sea! You have the freedom to relax and shape the day to your liking. Kühlungsborn boasts miles of sandy beaches, perfect for sunbathing, collecting shells, or even building sandcastles. If you prefer a more leisurely pace, take a pleasant walk along the beach promenade, and don't miss a visit to the pier, where you can enjoy the fresh sea breeze and stunning views of the Baltic coast.
From Kühlungsborn, today's stage of your cycling vacation from Lübeck to Stralsund mostly follows the scenic Baltic Sea coast. Cycle towards Warnemünde and take a detour to the eerie "ghost forest" near Nienhagen. Here ancient beech trees and twisted shrubs create an eerie, fairytale-like atmosphere. Upon reaching Warnemünde, you can choose to take the ferry (not included) to Hohe Düne or continue by bike to the picturesque Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula. It is well known for its charming villages and serene bays. Your day ends with an overnight stay in either Wustrow or Ahrenshoop, both offering a peaceful and scenic setting to relax.
Today, you’ll spend the day cycling through the stunning Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula. On your way to your overnight stay in Zingst, take a short break for a walk through the Darß primeval forest, immersing yourself in the tranquil beauty of the natural surroundings. A visit to the Darß Museum in Prerow will provide insight into the peninsula’s maritime culture and history. Once you arrive in Zingst, head straight to the beach to unwind. Enjoy a long sunbath, treat yourself to an ice cream, or grab a ball and join a lively game of beach volleyball.
Today promises another fantastic day at the Beach of Zingst. Take in the expansive views of the Baltic Sea, the soothing sound of the waves, and the calls of the seagulls overhead. For a bit of exercise, stroll along the 270-metre-long Zingster pier and enjoy the fresh sea air. If you’d like to spend some time cycling, we recommend a trip to the Hohe Düne viewing platform in the eastern part of the peninsula. From here, you’ll be treated to a stunning panoramic view of the untouched northern beach, a perfect spot for photos or simply soaking in the natural beauty of the area.
Today, you leave the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula behind and cross over to the mainland via the Meiningen Bridge, making your way to the historic town of Barth, once known as the Vineta town.
From here, you’ll continue on the final stage of your bike tour from Lübeck towards your destination, Stralsund. As you arrive in the city, the majestic brick churches and townhouses in the old town offer a glimpse into Stralsund’s prosperous past during its time as a prominent member of the Hanseatic League. At the harbour, take the chance to visit the Gorch Fock, a training sailing ship, and discover the maritime history of the Baltic and North Sea at the Ozeaneum.
