Our Bike Tour around Würzburg leads you right into the heart of Franconia where wine-growing has been cultivated for even more than 1200 years. The refreshing wines can be perfectly combined with the Franconian cuisine. Your starting point is Würzburg – you will be impressed! On the River Main Cycle Path you will be cycling towards the Spessart region where you will explore Gemünden and find out why Lohr is known as City of Snow White. After visiting the castle of Wertheim you will be cycling back to Würzburg. The 2-Franconian-Cycle Path leads to Volkach which is surrounded by countless vineyards. Soon you will arrive in Würzburg via Ochsenfurt.
Your bike tour begins at the old residential town of Würzburg. The city is over 1300-years-old city and has preserved its impressive cityscape over the centuries. Take a stroll through the city immediately after check-in. Visit the Marienberg Fortress, the city's most famous landmark. The Würzburg Residence and the Old Main Bridge are also worthwhile. At the end of the day, treat yourself to a sparkling wine from one of the vineyards surrounding Würzburg – cheers!
You leisurely follow the Main bike path towards the north-west. Shortly after leaving the demarcation of Würzburg you will reach Veitshöchheim. The palace there once served as the summer residence of Würzburg's prince-bishop. Its rococo gardens are among the most beautiful in Europe. Follow along the Main river until you reach Gemünden, the gateway to the Spessart. From the Scherenburg castle above you will have a fantastic view over the Main valley. A stone's throw away is the Snow White town of Lohr. You will spend the night in Gemünden or Lohr.
The route continues through the Spessart-Mainland region, accompanied by Franconian vineyards. The Franck House in Marktheidenfeld is particularly eye-catching. Legend has it that sparkling wine production in Germany was launched here at this exact bright blue house. On the way to Wertheim, the lofty ruins of Wertheim Castle will catch your eye. Built in the 12th century, it still offers a wonderful view over the River Main - it's well worth the climb. Afterwards, take a stroll through Wertheim's old town. You will spend the night in Marktheidenfeld or Wertheim.
Today's stage of your bike tour around Würzburg first takes you to Bettingen. You will leave the Main river behind to follow the Aalbach bike path towards Würzburg. You cycle through the charming Aalbach valley, which features several climbs and a varied paths. Take a break at the former Benedictine monastery in Holzkirchen. After arriving in Würzburg, try the classic bakery. Traditionally, you are allowed to bring your own food in to those wine houses.
From Würzburg, follow the 2-Franconia Bike Path on your bike tour around Würzburg. Today it takes you through wide open spaces along vegetable and grain fields. Volkach is one of the most important wine towns of the Franconian wine region. Situated on a bend of the Main river, the small town looks back on a long history of wine production. You cycle along the Main to the wine trading town of Kitzingen. Its landmark is the Falterturm tower, whose leaning helmet is particularly striking. It is jokingly referred to as the leaning tower of Kitzingen. The route continues briskly to Ochsenfurt at the southern tip of the Main river triangle. The old town is surrounded by an almost complete fortification system. Treat yourself to a glass of wine from one of the vineyards surrounding Ochsenfurt before setting off for your destination of Würzburg.
