Our bike tour to the Wadden Sea Islands takes you into the world of swimming dreams! Swimming dreams? That's how Husum writer Theodor Storm once described the Halligen off the German North Sea coast. Then as now, the small marsh islands, lapped by the water and influenced by the tides, are idyllic gems in the middle of the temperamental North Sea. You start your daily cycle tours from the harbor towns of Husum and Schlüttsiel. On our bike tour to the Wadden Sea Islands islands, you will get to know Hallig Hooge and Langeneß. Even on the ferry trips, you will be struck by the artificial mounds of the Hallig islands, which appear to be small islands in the North Sea. You can also take a trip to the island of Föhr or the island of Amrum on our bike tour to the Wadden Sea Islands - just as you like. Both islands are known for their sandy beaches, unspoiled nature and dune landscapes. Another highlight of our cycle tour across the Halligen is a trip to the seaside resort of St. Peter-Ording, which is known for its miles of beach, unique pile dwellings and numerous kite and windsurfers. On our bike tour to the Wadden Sea Islands islands, you can expect little to no inclines along the way, but you can expect some strong winds, which can make cycling a little more difficult depending on the wind direction.
Your bike tour to the Wadden Sea Islands begins in Husum. Once dubbed the grey town by the sea by the writer Theodor Storm, probably the town's most famous son, Husum welcomes you with a lively old town, a colorful harbor and a surprisingly diverse range of cultural events. Visit the North Friesland Museum. It provides insights into dyke construction and coastal protection as well as the lifestyle of the Frisians. Learn more about the Halligen islands off the coast, which you will visit in the coming days.
At the start of your bike tour to the Wadden Sea Islands, take the train to the seaside resort of St. Peter-Ording. Treat yourself to a long sunbath on the 12-kilometre-long sandy beach and watch the kite surfers as they jet over the North Sea waves. On the beach, you will notice the striking pile dwellings. For more than 100 years, they have catered for the physical well-being of beach visitors. Cycle along the coast back to Husum. On the way, the red and white striped lighthouse of Westerhever will catch your eye. It is the landmark of the Eiderstedt peninsula.
After breakfast, take the train to Sylt (included). Westerland can be reached via the Hindenburgdamm, which has connected the island to the mainland for around 100 years. You are spoilt for choice at each location: whether you want to cycle south to the Hörnum lighthouse or north to List for a fish sandwich - Sylt offers a 200-kilometre network of cycle paths with numerous options for short and long cycle tours. In the evening, take the train back to Husum.
The second stage starts early in the morning today, but there is also plenty to experience: you start the day with the cycle tour from Husum to the Nordstrand peninsula. The ferry (included) takes you from Strucklahnungshörn to Hallig Hooge at 9:15 a.m., leaving you plenty of time to explore the Wadden Sea. After about an hour's drive, you will reach Hooge, whose terps can be seen from afar. The Hallig is the second largest in the North Frisian Wadden Sea. Explore the small island by bike. Visit the Königspesel, an original preserved captain's house and the Storm Surge Cinema, which brings the ever-present danger of storm surges to the big screen. In the afternoon, take the ferry (included) to Schlüttsiel, your overnight accommodation for the next few days.
Today we are taking the ferry (not included) to Hallig Langeneß. The narrow and elongated Hallig is the largest of the ten North Frisian Hallig islands. Explore Langeneß in a relaxed manner on your bike and get to know the Hallig, which is characterized by wide meadows and small watercourses. Visit the Captain Tadsen Museum on the Ketelswarft and the Friesenstube on the Honkenswarft. Or how about a detour to the Nordmarsch lighthouse on the western tip of Langeneß? Take the ferry back to Schlüttsiel.
On today's excursion day of your bike tour to the Wadden Sea Islands, you are spoiled for choice. You can choose to visit the island of Föhr or the island of Amrum. First you cycle to Dagebüll. From there, you can easily reach the respective island by ferry (not included). With Föhr you get to know the green island. Thanks to its sheltered location, it has particularly lush vegetation. Explore the island by bike or enjoy the sound of the North Sea on the south beach. You can also enjoy a kilometer-long sandy beach on Amrum, the so-called Kniepsand. Or how about a guided mudflat hike? In the evening, take the ferry (not included) back to Dagebüll. You will spend the night in Schlüttsiel.
From Schlüttsiel you cycle back to Husum. With the North Sea in view, you reach the causeway to Hamburger Hallig after a few kilometers. The small peninsula is very easy to reach by bike. Treat yourself to a culinary break in the only restaurant and enjoy the view of the Wadden Sea and the surrounding Hallig islands. Back on the mainland, the route takes you along the salt marshes to Husum. Enjoy the rest of the day with a walk through the park of Husum Castle and visit the Theodor Storm House, which provides insights into the life and work of the writer.
