The cycle tour from Villach via Grado to Trieste forms the second part of the Alpe-Adria Cycle Path. It combines the rugged peaks of the Alps with the fascinating coastal landscape along the Gulf of Venice. The Kanaltal valley takes you along easy paths through the Carnic and Julian Alps and the Karawanken mountains before you continue your journey on the Friuli-Venezia Giulia plain. Past crystal-clear lakes, romantic waterfalls, through vast forests and fields to steep cliffs and miles of beaches – the variety of landscapes makes this cycle tour from Villach via Grado to Trieste a very special experience.
Explore the second-largest city in Carinthia, situated at the confluence of the Drau and Gail rivers. Immerse yourself in the almost Mediterranean atmosphere, nestled in the heart of the Alps. The medieval town centre, combined with expansive parks, offers a unique blend of cosmopolitan charm and Carinthian tradition. Bikes, as per your booking, are available at the hotel for your convenience.
On the first stage of your bike tour you'll leave Villach behind and head towards Italy. Follow the river Gail and winding through the stunning Gail Valley and the Carnic Alps towards Triest. Soon, you'll bid farewell to Austria with a cheerful "servus" and greet Italy with a spirited "ciao." The tour takes you through the Canal Valley, with Tarvisio at its heart. For centuries, Austrians, Italians, Slovenians, and Friulians have coexisted here, creating a vibrant blend of languages and cultures.
Today, you will reach Lake Predil, with its crisp, often intensely green waters. A breathtaking panorama awaits, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Take the time to soak in the atmosphere and allow yourself to be enchanted by the natural beauty of the region. Cycle through nearly untouched nature, passing through expansive forests, as you make your way to today's destination at the foothills of the Julian Alps.
The charming town of Gemona lies at the southern end of the Canal Valley. Although it was largely destroyed in an earthquake in the 1970s, it has been lovingly restored. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, with its columns still leaning from the earthquake, dominates the town’s skyline. As you continue your journey, the landscape transforms; the rugged mountains give way to rolling hills which are all but covered with vineyards.
A stroll through the capital of the province of Udine reveals why the locals are so fond of their city. With its sociable atmosphere and impressive buildings, it’s a place where people gather in charming wine taverns to chat after work. Continue your cycle through reed-filled landscapes and alongside tranquil water channels towards the Adriatic Sea, reaching the coastal town of Grado. Here, you can unwind and sunbathe on one of the picturesque beaches of the Golden Island.
You cycle leisurely through vast fields and along dramatic coastlines towards Trieste. Perched on a rocky cliff in the bay of Grignano, the magnificent Miramare Castle offers stunning views. As you reach the centre of Trieste, the city's architecture evokes the grandeur of Vienna, Prague, or Budapest, while still embracing its distinctive southern flair. Conclude your tour at a relaxed pace in one of the city's traditional coffee houses.
