Bike tour to Sylt, Rømø and Hooge

The small town of Husum is characterized by the interplay of the tides. The North Sea reaches right into the Husum inland port. Observe the ebb and flow of the tide up close right in the town center, stroll through the narrow streets and alleyways and marvel at the picturesque, colorful gabled houses. The first stage of your bike tour to Sylt takes you – always along the dyke – through North Friesland. You cycle along the North Sea Cycle Path through numerous nature and bird sanctuaries. You will certainly meet numerous sheep frolicking on the dykes. On your left hand side you'll pass the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park with its unique Halligen islands. Treat yourself to a break on the dyke or take a detour along the boardwalk to the Hamburger Hallig for a cup of coffee and enjoy the fantastic view before you reach today's destination.

The Halligen –  small marsh islands in the Wadden Sea regularly are flooded completely. Thanks to the terps – artificial mounds – the islands is inhabited all year round. You and your bike will take the ferry to Hallig Hooge, the largest Hallig in the North Sea. In the storm surge cinema you'll can experience the might of a typical storm surge. Enjoy the unique landscape before taking the ferry back to the mainland.

First, you and your bikes board the train today and travel along the Hindenburgdamm to the Queen of the North Sea. The extend of your bike tour on Sylt is entirely up to you. You might want to visit the Hörnum lighthouse at the southern shore of the island. Sylt is also perfect for a relaxing day at the beach. If you haven't treated yourself to a fish sandwich or a slice of Frisian cake yet, seize the day! Then take the ferry to the Danish island of Rømø.

Discover the beauty and tranquillity of Denmark's largest,  southernmost North Sea island. The most impressive part of the popular vacation island Rømø is its beach! It is the longest and widest of its kind in the whole of Northern Europe and easily accessible by bike. From here you will reach the mainland via an approximately ten-kilometer-long causeway. Once you arrive in Tønder, enjoy the evening in the town with its well-preserved patrician houses in the Baroque and Rococo style.

Today you'll leave Denmark behind on the North Sea coastal cycle path. Just across the border, the Emil Nolde Museum in Neukirchen is well worth a visit. The exhibition offers insights into the life and work of one of the most influential expressionist painters. Cycle along quiet paths through meadows and fields to Niebüll. Once you arrive we recommend a visit to the local natural history museum. You will spend the night in Niebüll or Schlüttsiel.

The last stage of your bike tour is already upon you. You leave Niebüll heading south. If your legs aren't tiered yet take the slightly longer route via the Nordstrand peninsula. Incidentally, Nordstrand is the birthplace of the North Frisian national drink Pharisäer. The sweet coffee drink with a good shot of rum goes perfectly with a slice of Frisian cake.
