Our short bike tour in the Spessart begins in Würzburg in the heart of wine Franconia. The time-honoured residence city impresses with a remarkable townscape and sets the perfect mood for a bike tour through the Spessart and along the Main. Visit Marienberg Fortress and indulge your palate with Franconian wines and specialities before an equally enjoyable ride along the Main cycle path to Gemünden and the Snow White town of Lohr. Accompanied by vineyards, enchanting riverside landscapes and vast forests, you cycle from Lohr, on the edge of the Spessart, to
Marktheidenfeld with almost no climbing. With Wertheim, you reach the northernmost town in Baden-Württemberg and have the opportunity to get to know one of the most beautiful castle ruins in Germany. On the Aalbach cycle path, which connects Wertheim with Würzburg, you return to your starting point, combined with the odd climb. Our five-day cycling tour along the Spessart and the Main is ideal for all those who want to experience a stress-free short holiday along the Main, packed with unforgettable impressions.
Welcome to the Main! The old royal seat of Würzburg is the ideal starting point for your short bike tour in the Spessart. We recommend arriving early, as Würzburg is bursting with things to see and experience. Visit the Marienberg Fortress above the city, stroll through the Residenz Court Garden and walk across the Old Main Bridge. To round off the day, try a sparkling Silvaner from the Würzburger Stein vineyard, the largest single vineyard in Germany.
Here we go! Shortly after the city limits of Würzburg, you will reach Veitshöchheim on the first stage of your bike tour along the Spessart and the Main. The town's highlight is the former summer residence of the Würzburg prince-bishops, whose garden is one of the most beautiful rococo gardens in Europe. Via Karlstadt you will reach Gemünden, the gate to the Spessart, whose ruins of the Scherenburg castle catch your eye from afar. In Lohr, so the legend says, once lived the model for the fairy tale Schneewittchen of the Brothers Grimm. You can learn more about this in the Spessart Museum, which calls the Speaking Mirror its own. You will spend the night in Gemünden or Lohr.
Accompanied by Franconian vineyards and the wooded slopes of the Spessart, you cycle along the Main Cycle Route through the Spessart Mainland. In Marktheidenfeld, the Franck House is a special eye-catcher. According to tradition, sparkling wine production in Germany was invented in this bright blue house. The castle in Wertheim, the town's landmark, is picturesquely situated above the town and offers a wonderful view over the Main River after a climb. In addition, the old town with its richly decorated half-timbered houses and small alleys is extremely worth seeing. You will spend the night in Marktheidenfeld or Wertheim.
Your bike tour along the Spessart and the Main leads you upstream to Bettingen. You leave the Main and follow the Aalbach cycle path. Through the charming Aalbach Valley, combined with a few climbs and a varied route, you return to Würzburg. On the way, stops at the former Benedictine monastery in Holzkirchen and at Uettingen Castle, which is in the classicist style, are worthwhile. In Würzburg, visit a classic bakery. In these wine houses, it is traditionally allowed to bring your own food and have a good time with drinks on offer.
