A new visual treat awaits you at every turn: whether it's grandiose wide landscapes, legendary lush forests or imposing historic castles and palaces. If you are interested in Scottish history, there is plenty on offer on this trip. Discover traces of the Picts – the indigenous Scottish people – and their kingdoms. Visit Scone Palace, the coronation site of Scottish kings and the legendary Clamis Castle. A highlight is your excursion to the famous university town of St Andrews. You can spend a whole day in this picturesque town on your bike tour in Scotland!
Ceud mille fàilte to your bike tour in Scotland! The Gaelic greeting at the entrance to Pitlochry perfectly captures the spirit of your journey. Nestled in the heart of the stunning Highland Perthshire landscape, this charming town embodies the romantic image of traditional Scotland. With excellent train connections to major Scottish airports (not included), you can travel in comfort. Spend the day exploring Pitlochry and its surrounding area—perhaps visit Edradour, one of Scotland’s smallest whisky distilleries, for a unique and authentic experience.
In the morning, you can pick up the rental bikes you’ve booked, marking the beginning of your bike tour in Scotland. Set off to experience the wild, romantic beauty of Highland Perthshire from the saddle. The landscape is dominated by dramatic mountains, lush green valleys dotted with lochs, roaring rivers, and mystical forests. After an initial climb, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views and a thrilling 12-kilometre descent. For those seeking a longer route, a scenic option takes you through the tranquil valleys of the Angus Glens, framed by the majestic Grampians, the highest part of the Scottish Highlands. Your day ends with an overnight stay in either Alyth or Kirriemuir.
From Alyth, you’ll cycle eastward, with the majestic Grampians once again providing a spectacular backdrop to the north. Your journey takes you to Glamis Castle, a stunning, picture-perfect castle steeped in legend. Glamis Castle is the setting of many tales, and according to local folklore, it harbours more dark secrets than any other castle in the British Isles. While the connection to Shakespeare's Macbeth—where Macbeth is named Thane of Glamis before ascending to the Scottish throne—is fictional, the castle’s ties to the British royal family are very real. The Queen Mum spent her childhood here. On your return ride to Alyth, you’ll have the chance to soak in the region's natural beauty once again.
Leaving Alyth, you head south, cycling through the undulating landscape towards the River Tay. Continue along Scotland’s longest river to reach Dundee, a vibrant city on the Tay estuary. Dundee offers a wealth of experiences, such as a visit to the RRS Discovery, the ship used in Robert Falcon Scott's pioneering polar expedition. You can also explore a traditional jute mill, where you’ll learn about the fascinating process of fabric production. Interestingly, Dundee is renowned as one of the sunniest places in Scotland, adding to the city's charm and appeal.
Your bike tour in Scotland takes you across the two-kilometre-long Tay Road Bridge into the Kingdom of Fife. While no longer a real kingdom, the name originates from the ancient Pictish kingdom of Fib. St Andrews, beautifully set on a headland overlooking the rugged North Sea, is home to Scotland’s third-oldest English-speaking university and was once the heart of religious life in the country during the Middle Ages. As you explore the town, you’ll encounter traces of its rich history at every turn. Stroll along the cobbled streets, walk the mile-long beach, and be sure to visit the impressive ruins of the castle, cathedral, and abbey. Despite their decay, these buildings still convey a sense of their former splendour. St Andrews is also known as the birthplace of golf, making it a mecca for golfers from around the world!
First, cross the River Tay and cycle upstream along its scenic banks. Take a detour to the historic town of Falkland, home to the impressive Falkland Palace. The palace complex, with its fascinating history and beautifully landscaped gardens, is well worth a visit. Continuing on, you’ll reach your destination: the small but vibrant city of Perth, beautifully situated along the River Tay. Take time to explore its historic city centre, nestled between two public parks, with elegant Georgian townhouses and medieval church towers. Whether by foot or bike, you'll enjoy the city's charm. Known by some as Scotland’s most modern city, Perth is officially Scotland's youngest city, having only been granted city status in 2012.
The final day of your bike tour in Scotland is yours to enjoy at your own pace. For history-loving cyclists, a must-see is a visit to Scone Palace, the coronation site of Scottish kings. It was here that figures such as Macbeth, Robert the Bruce, and Charles II were crowned on the legendary Stone of Scone. The palace is home to numerous exhibits that highlight its significant role in Scottish history. No visit to Scone Palace is complete without exploring the extensive estate’s beautiful gardens. One standout feature is the Murray Star Maze, a fascinating labyrinth shaped like a pentagonal star.
