The bike tour in Scotland takes you from the edge of the wild and romantic Scottish Highlands through the beautiful lowland landscapes of Perthshire and the Kingdom of Fife. This is Scotland straight out of a picture book. You cycle along the River Tay, through the Angus Glens and in front of the impressive panorama of the Grampians. A new visual treat awaits you at every turn: whether it's grandiose wide landscapes, legendary lush forests or imposing historic castles and palaces. If you are interested in Scottish history, there is plenty on offer on this trip. Discover traces of the Picts – the indigenous Scottish people – and their kingdoms. Visit Scone Palace, the coronation site of Scottish kings and the legendary Clamis Castle. A highlight is your excursion to the famous university town of St Andrews. You can spend a whole day in this picturesque town on your bike tour in Scotland!
Ceud mille fàilte on your bike tour in Scotland! The Gaelic greeting at the entrance to Pitlochry sets the tone. Idyllically situated in the heart of the beautiful landscape of Highland Perthshire, the small town lives up to many romantic notions of traditional Scotland. The train connections to the major Scottish airports allow you to travel in comfort (not included). Use the day to explore Pitlochry and its immediate surroundings. Visit Edradour, for example. The whisky distillery is one of the smallest in Scotland.
In the morning, you may pick up the rental bikes you have booked. Now set off on your bike tour in Scotland. Experience the charm of the wild and romantic landscape of Highland Perthshire from the saddle. The scenery is dominated by dramatic mountains, green valleys with their lochs, roaring rivers and mystical forests. First you have to climb a few meters in altitude. However, you will then be rewarded with breathtaking views and a descent of around 12 kilometers. A slightly longer route option takes you against the backdrop of the Grampians, the highest part of the Scottish mountains, through the tranquil valleys of the Angus Glens. You will spend the night in Alyth or Kirriemuir.
From Alyth, you cycle in an easterly direction. Once again, the Grampians form a spectacular panorama in the north. Visit Glamis Castle – a magnificent castle straight out of a picture book. Glamis Castle is the scene of numerous legends. If local legends are to be believed, it has more dark secrets than any other castle in the British Isles. In William Shakespeare's play Macbeth, Macbeth is the Thane of Glamis and Cawdor before he is crowned Scottish king. However, this connection is pure fiction. However, the relationship between Glamis Castle and the British royal family is real. The Queen Mum spent her childhood at the castle. On the way back to Alyth, you can once again enjoy the natural beauty of the region and the vastness of the landscape.
You leave Alyth heading south. The route leads through the hilly landscape to the River Tay. Continue along Scotland's longest river to Dundee. There is plenty to experience in this lively city on the Tay estuary. For example, visit the RRS Discovery. The ship was used in Robert Falcon Scott's pioneering polar expedition. In a jute mill, you will learn details about the production of the fabric. Incidentally, Dundee is considered one of the sunniest places in the country.
Your bike tour in Scotland takes you over the two-kilometre-long Tay Road Bridge into the Kingdom of Fife. The Kingdom of Fife is no longer a real kingdom. The name goes back to the Pictish kingdom of Fib. St Andrews is picturesquely situated on a headland on the rough North Sea. The town has the third oldest English-speaking university and was the center of religious life in Scotland in the Middle Ages. You will discover evidence of this rich history at every turn. Stroll through the cobbled streets and walk along the mile-long beach. Be sure to visit the ruins of the castle and cathedral as well as the remains of an abbey. You can still see the splendor of the now decaying buildings today. Incidentally, St. Andrews is considered the cradle of golf and is a mecca for golfers!
First cross the River Tay and cycle upstream along the banks. Take a detour to the historic town of Falkland with its royal palace. The palace complex with its eventful history and beautifully landscaped gardens is well worth a visit. Your destination, the small but lively city of Perth, is beautifully situated on the banks of the River Tay. Explore the historic city center, situated between two public parks, with its elegant Gregorian townhouses and medieval church towers on foot or by bike. Some call Perth the most modern city in Scotland. However, it is correct to say that Perth is Scotland's youngest city. It was only granted city status in 2012!
The last day of your bike tour in Scotland is entirely up to you. A must for history-loving cyclists: a bike trip to the coronation site of the Scottish kings – Scone Palace. Macbeth, Robert the Bruce and Charles II, among others, were crowned here on the Stone of Scone. See numerous exhibits in the palace that bear witness to the importance of the castle in Scottish history. A visit to Scone Palace would not be complete without a visit to the parks of the extensive estate with its beautiful gardens. One highlight is the Murray Star Maze, a labyrinth in the shape of a pentagonal star.
