The bike tour from Salzburg to Prague connects the Mozart City with the Golden City. These two cities have a lot to offer - but you will also experience a lot during the tour! First you cycle through the dreamlike Salzkammergut past mountain peaks and glittering lakes to the Imperial City Bad Ischl. Along the Traun you reach Linz and from there you continue via the romantic Mühlviertel to South Bohemia. You follow the Vltava River and cycle through magnificent primeval and cultural landscapes and idyllic Bohemian villages. The old towns of Český Krumlov and České Budějovice will also delight you. Passing beautiful river landscapes, you will cycle past numerous castles and palaces that will take you back in time. The bike tour from Salzburg to Prague is quite demanding, but you can always cool off by jumping into the cool water. The beautiful and varied landscape will also more than reward your efforts.

Day 1: Individual arrival in Salzburg

Welcome to your cycling tour from Salzburg to Prague! Take the opportunity to explore the vibrant and multifaceted city. A visit to the Hohensalzburg Fortress, Salzburg's iconic landmark, offers stunning panoramic views across the city and its picturesque surroundings.

Stroll through the heart of Salzburg's Old Town, along the historic Getreidegasse, where you’ll step back in time to the birthplace of Mozart and immersing yourself in the city's rich cultural heritage.

Day 2: Salzburg – St. Gilgen on Lake Wolfgang, approx. 50 km

Leaving Salzburg behind may be difficult, but the next days of your cycling tour from Salzburg to Prague promise to be equally exciting. The first stage takes you through the scenic Flachgau region, following the historic Ischlerbahn railway route. As you cycle through charming villages such as Eugendorf and Thalgau, you'll make your way to the picturesque Lake Mondsee. Take time to enjoy a leisurely lunch by the lakeside before continuing towards Lake Wolfgang.
Your destination for today is St. Gilgen. Although Mozart himself never visited, his presence is still deeply felt here—his grandfather and mother were born in the area, and his sister made her home in this charming lakeside town.

Day 3: St. Gilgen – Traunsee – Linz, approx. 60 km + train ride

You begin today’s ride along the shores of Lake Wolfgangsee the views of the lake is captivating. Take a refreshing dip in the cool water before continuing your journey. Following the Ischler Ache, you’ll cycle to the imperial town of Bad Ischl. Here, make sure to visit the Kaiservilla, the former summer residence of Empress Elisabeth and Emperor Franz Joseph.
Continuing along the Traun River, you’ll soon reach Ebensee, situated on the shores of Lake Traunsee. From there, your journey takes you to Gmunden. Now your time in the Salzkammergut region has come to an end.

In Gmunden, board the train to Linz. The the capital of Upper Austria awaits for you, nestled on the banks of the Danube.

Day 4: Linz – Aigen – Český Krumlov, approx. 70 km + train ride

Today's cycling tour from Salzburg to Prague begins with a relaxed train ride to Aigen in the Mühlviertel. From there, you’ll soon cross into the Czech Republic by bike. The route features a few challenging climbs, but the stunning, varied landscape will more than make up for the effort.

Take a break to refresh yourself at the Lipno Reservoir before continuing along the Vltava River towards Český Krumlov. It is known as one of the most picturesque towns in the Czech Republic. It was named a UNESCO World Heritage site due to its beautifully preserved Old Town featuring historic buildings in Renaissance and Baroque styles. A leisurely stroll through its charming streets will leave a lasting impression.

Day 5: Český Krumlov – Budweis, approx. 30 km

The fourth stage of your cycling tour from Salzburg to Prague is intentionally shorter, giving you more time to explore. In Český Krumlov, be sure to visit the impressive castle complex, perched high above the Vltava River. It is amongstCentral Europe’s most important architectural monuments and as such offers a fascinating glimpse into the region’s history.
After soaking in the sights, hop back on your bike and cycle through peaceful farming villages, enjoying the tranquillity of nature once more. Soon, you’ll reach Budweis, renowned for its beer. Take a leisurely stroll through the charming Old Town before sampling some of the local brews. Cheers!

Day 6: Budweis – Písek, approx. 70 km

Leaving Budweis behind, you’ll cycle along the Vltava River, immersing yourself in the stunning landscapes of South Bohemia. Soon, perched high above the river, you’ll catch sight of Hluboká Castle, one of the region’s most beautiful landmarks. Originally a medieval fortress, the castle was transformed into its current neo-Gothic style after several reconstructions, with Windsor Castle serving as the inspiration.
Take time to stroll through the expansive castle park and explore the castle itself, with its many turrets, battlements, and charming architectural details.
The final stretch of your journey takes you through the scenic countryside, following the golden Otava River towards Písek.

Day 7: Písek – Sedlčany, approx. 70 km

Today, your bike tour from Salzburg to Prague follows tje Otava River towards Zvíkov. Here the impressive Zvíkov Castle marks the confluence of the Otava and Vltava rivers. Perched on a headland, the castle was one of the most formidable fortresses in medieval Bohemia, renowned for its strategic importance and difficulty to capture.

Continuing on, you’ll reach another highlight: Orlík Castle, an important Gothic structure overlooking the Vltava. The cycle path then takes you through the lush, deep green Bohemian Forest, passing through charming villages and alongside the Vltava Reservoir, before reaching your destination for the day—Sedlčany. Take time to enjoy the peaceful evening in this picturesque town.

Day 8: Sedlčany – Prague, approx. 65 km

The final stage of your cycling tour from Salzburg to Prague takes you through a series of idyllic villages. Along the way, you’ll pass several welcoming pubs, perfect for a relaxing break where you can savour traditional Bohemian cuisine and a refreshing local beer.

The undeniable highlight of today’s journey is your arrival in the magnificent Golden City of Prague. Take your time to wander through the historic city centre, exploring its winding alleys and charming streets. Cross the iconic Charles Bridge and enjoy the breathtaking views over the city, before heading up to Prague Castle for a panoramic vista that is sure to leave a lasting impression.
