The Saar starts in the French Vosges mountains and makes its way through Lorraine and the Saarland to Rhineland-Palatinate. Saarbrücken, the starting point of our Bike tour along the Saar, is halfway along the route. You cycle through former coal mining areas and pass the Völklingen Ironworks, an impressive industrial monument. A visit to the fortified town of Saarlouis, built according to the plans of the French master builder Vauban, is also part of our Bike tour along the Saar, as is a ride through the Merzig region, which is famous for its apple wine. Another highlight of our Bike tour along the Saar is the forest-lined Mettlacher Saarschleife and the small wine town of Saarburg. The Roman city of Trier is the destination of the tour, which you can enjoy in a relaxed manner along the Saar with almost no inclines. Our Bike tour along the Saar is ideal for a short break or a long weekend. Thanks to the not-too-long stages, you will have enough time along the way to get to know the charming landscapes as well as the pretty towns and villages along the Saar.
Your Bike tour along the Saar begins in Saarbrücken, the capital of Saarland. The city exudes a certain French flair, having been under French rule several times throughout its history. Take a stroll through the St. Johanner Markt, visit the casemates below the Schlossplatz and get in the mood for the days ahead with Saarland specialties such as Dibbelabbes and a glass of cider.
The first stage of your Bike tour along the Saar takes you to the Völklingen Ironworks. This impressive industrial monument once served as an ironworks and today offers adventurous insights into the various processing plants and blast furnaces. Continue to your destination for the day, Saarlouis. The fortified town was built by order of the French King Louis XIV, the Sun King. He liked it so much that he gave it his name. The remains of the star shaped fortress can still be seen in the old town today.
Today, the route first takes you through the Merzig countryside. Characterized by many fruit trees, the region around Merzig is often referred to as the Äppelkischd of the Saarland. Along the Saar, you will reach the famous Saarschleife shortly before Mettlach. If you would like to take a look at it, it is worth climbing up to the Cloef viewpoint. Enjoy the foresight views over the river before you reach your destination for the day, Mettlach. The Old Tower and the Ceramics Museum are particularly worth a visit. It provides an insight into the 250-year history of the famous ceramics manufacturer Villeroy & Boch.
You follow the course of the Saar and reach the wine town of Saarburg halfway along the route. The ruins of Saarburg Castle above the town will catch your eye from afar. There is a 20-metre-high waterfall in the old town, which was already used to power mill wheels in the Middle Ages. The Saar meets the Moselle in Konz. You reach your destination of Trier – a crowning finale to your Bike tour along the Saar. The Porta Nigra is the landmark of Germany's oldest city. The black gate is the ideal starting point to explore other Roman buildings on a walk through the city.
