Odense is most famous as the birthplace of the writer Hans Christian Andersen, whose fairy tales are beloved worldwide. You can delve deeper into his life and works at several sites around the city, including his birthplace and the H. C. Andersen Hus. For a different perspective of Odense, consider a boat trip along the Odense Å, offering a peaceful way to discover the city from the water.
Today, you will cycle towards the Little Belt, the strait that separates Fyn from the Danish mainland. Along Cycle Route 6, you will immerse yourself in the lush nature and idyllic landscapes of Fyn. The region is rightfully known as the Garden of Denmark. Once you've reached today's destination Middelfart, take the time to explorer. Here you'll find the Henner Friisers Hus one of Denmark's most beautiful half-timbered houses. If you're interested in experiencing the waters, why not take a boat trip across the Little Belt? Crossing the Lillebæltsbroen bridge, you leave Middelfart behind and reach the coast of Jutland. A stop in Fredericia is highly recommended. The city centre, designed in a checkerboard pattern, is encircled by a historic rampart, here you can explore old cannons and their guardians lodgings.
Continuing your journey, you will arrive in Vejle, your destination for the day. The city's iconic landmark is the windmill, situated at the heart of the city and visible from many vantage points. In contrast, the modern, wave-shaped Bølgen housing complex at its harbour is a striking architectural feat- as such it has been won numerous design awards.
Today's stage of your bike tour form Odense to Arhus begins at the Veijle Fjord – cross the bridge and continue along the coastline. Then the path weaves inland past rolling hills through lush forests. Take a break in Horsens where you can visit the former state prison. It has been transformed into a museum and cultural venue renowned far beyond the region. Horsens' most famous son is the seafarer Vitus Bering. In the 18th century he was the first to sail the Bering Strait between Asia and North America. A feat which a park next to the train station here still commemorates.
Along the Horsens Fjord, you will enjoy a relatively flat cycle route to Hou, a charming small harbour town. Along the way, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the Baltic Sea, with several beaches inviting you to take a relaxing break. In Odder, explore the historic water and steam mill, as well as the Odder Sognekirke, one of Denmark’s oldest churches. In Norsminde, a stroll to the quaint harbour is highly recommended, and don't miss the opportunity to sample some freshly smoked fish. You will spend the night in either Odder or Norsminde.
