Hallig Hooge, Sylt, Rømø and Fanø – on our bike tour to the North Frisian Islands you will experience pure island feeling! You start in Husum. Situated directly on the Wadden Sea in Schleswig-Holstein, the colourful harbour town is the ideal starting point to explore the fascinating island world on the German and Danish North Sea coast. On an excursion to Hallig Hooge, you will get to know one of the ten Schwimmende Träume (floating dreams) in the Wadden Sea, as the writer Theodor Storm once called the Halligen. Close to the tides, endless views of the sea and plenty of peace and quiet offer relaxing moments in the midst of the sometimes boisterous North Sea. This is also the case on Sylt, another highlight of our bike tour of the North Sea Islands. The queen of the North Sea offers fantastic dune landscapes and endless dream beaches. The Danish North Sea islands of Rømø and Fanø are dreamy. Miles of beaches, unique nature and typical Danish serenity make the small islets off the coast of Jutland a special cycling holiday experience. And in the middle of it all? On our bike tour to the North Frisian Islands, you cycle along the North Sea coast and on dikes with almost no climbing. You will get to know small and larger towns that, like Ribe and Esbjerg, look back on a longer and shorter history.
Your bike tour to the North Frisian Islands starts in Husum. The writer Theodor Storm once described his home town the grey city by the sea. He was wrong, because the largest city in North Friesland welcomes you with a lively old town, a colourful harbour and diverse cultural offerings. The centre of the town is the market square, in the middle of which is Husum's secret landmark, the Tine-Brunnen (a fountain). The North Sea extends into Husum's inland harbour and allows you to experience high and low tide in the middle of the town.
The first leg of your bike tour to the North Frisian Islands takes you all along the coast. On your way, it's worth making a detour to the Hamburg Hallig. The peninsula is a wonderful place to cycle to. Let your gaze wander over the sea and the surrounding Halligen and treat yourself to a hearty lunch in the only inn on the small island. You have reached your destination for the day at Schlüttsiel ferry terminal. It was created in the course of the embankment of the Hauke-Haien-Koog. The Koog serves as a resting and breeding place for many bird species, ideal for birdwatchers and those who want to become one.
From Schlüttsiel you take the ferry to Hallig Hooge, the second largest Hallig in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea. On the sea you can already recognise the individual terps of Hooge from afar. Several times a year, it's landfall on the Hallig. The storm surge cinema shows the power of the North Sea tides on film. Particularly worth seeing is Königspesel on the Hanswarft. Located in an original captain's house, the Frisian parlour is decorated with countless tiles that look back into the seafarers' past. Or how about a carriage ride that takes you past all the island's highlights? Take the ferry back to Schlüttsiel.
Your bike tour to the North Frisian Islands first takes you to Sylt. You board the train in Niebüll and reach Westerland, the island's main town, via the Hindenburgdamm. Sylt's network of cycle paths stretches over 200 kilometres. Cycle the island just as you like. Whether on a short or longer tour, the island offers cycling pleasure at its best. Take the ferry from List to the Danish island of Rømø. You will spend the night in Havneby, the island's main town.
You spend today's day of your bike tour to the North Frisian islands according to your own wishes and ideas. Rømø's beaches together form the largest sandy beach in Northern Europe. They are ideal for spending relaxing hours. Whether it's an extensive sunbath, hours of swimming, a kilometre-long walk or a ride on a beach sailboat – arrange the day to suit your taste. If you want to explore the island by bike, no problem. Well-maintained cycle paths take you to the north of the island to Kommandørgården, the whalebone fence at Juvre or the 19-metre-high Spidsbjerg, which offers views of the island and the sea.
Today you will cross the Romodoemningen to the Danish mainland. From afar you will see Ribe Cathedral, which immediately catches your eye with its unequal towers. It is the landmark of Ribe, the oldest town in the country. The town centre, characterised by half-timbered houses and cobblestone streets, exudes a special atmosphere. Ribe was an important port and trading town in the Viking Age and the Middle Ages. Travel 1200 years into the past at the Ribe VikingeCenter and the Ribes Vikinger Museum and immerse yourself in the fascinating world of the Vikings.
The last leg of your bike tour to the North Frisian Islands takes you back to the sea. Your destination is Esbjerg. Climb the Vandtårnet, one of the landmarks of Denmark's youngest city. From the observation deck of the water tower you have a wonderful view of the city, the harbour and the island of Fanø. If you like, take a trip to the island. Reached by ferry in a short crossing, Fanø offers you kilometres of sandy beaches and idyllic places. With a bit of luck, you will find washed-up amber, the gold of the sea. Back in Esbjerg, it's worth visiting Sædding Strand, overlooked by the sculpture group Men at Sea.
