The Little Belt is the focus of our bike tour along the Lillebælt. The strait between the Jutland peninsula and the island of Funen connects the Kattegat in the north with the Baltic Sea in the south. You start our bike tour at the Lillebælt in Flensburg. And in a sporty way! With an average of 75 kilometers per stage, you will cycle briskly and with almost no inclines along the Flensburg Fjord, the Baltic coast of southern Jutland and the islands of Funen, Ærø, Als and Tåsinge. And in the middle of it all: contrasting landscapes with lush forests, idyllic coastlines, small fishing villages and historic towns. On our bike tour along the Lillebælt you will cycle through royal castles, prehistoric remains and idyllic natural paradises that make the region around the Little Belt so unique. Experience porpoises cavorting in the water near Middelfart, climb the Funen Alps around Faaborg and get to know the bathing houses on the beach on the island of Ærø, which can be seen from far away. Enjoy in between again and again the view of the sea, the fresh sea air and the jump into the clear water - more perfect could not be your vacation on our bike tour at the Lillebælt.
In Flensburg, one of the northernmost cities in Germany, start your bike tour along the Lillebælt. After arriving at your hotel, grab your bikes and explore the well-preserved old town. Discover historic medieval buildings, picturesque courtyards and the Nordertor, the city's landmark. At the Rum Museum (housed in the Maritime Museum), learn how Flensburg once became prosperous through the trade of rum from the Caribbean.
At Flensburg you cross the German-Danish border. Accompanied by fresh wind, you will drive along the Flensburg Fjord. A first break is worthwhile in Gråsten. The castle there serves as a summer residence for the royal family and is one of the most beautiful parks in Northern Europe. Only a few kilometers away are the Düppeler Schanzen (Dybbøl skanser). The fortifications were the scene of the German-Danish War in 1864. After a short detour to Sønderborg, continue to Nydam Mose, a bog that was used as a sacrificial site in the Iron Age. In Åbenrå, explore the old town with its typical burgher and craftsman houses.
The second stage of your bike tour along the Lillebælt leads you first to Haderslev. The old town lies on a peninsula. It is dominated by the Vor Frue Domkirke. It is considered the most beautiful Gothic church in Denmark. The Haderslever Museum offers a remarkable collection of prehistoric finds and presents typical houses of Southern Jutland in the outdoor area. In your destination for the day, Kolding, you will notice the Koldinghus . The castle-like manor looks back on an exciting history. Today, it houses a museum. From the tower of the castle you will have a wonderful panoramic view of the city and the Kolding Fjord.
Today we are going to the island of Funen! You will cross the Lillebæltsbroen in Snoghøj. The bridge has been crossing the narrowest part of the Little Belt since 1935 and connects Jutland with the Funen harbor town of Middelfart. One of Denmark's most beautiful half-timbered houses is located near the harbor, the Henner Friisers Hus. Today's museum shows the history of whaling on the Little Belt. Take a boat tour and, with a bit of luck, spot harbor porpoises, which are numerous in the Little Belt. You will spend the night in the old harbor town of Assens or in the region around the charming village of Ebberup. If you stay overnight in Brobyværk, the bike path will take you into the interior of Funen.
Start the cycling stage of your bike tour at Lillebælt with a round trip over the Helnæs peninsula. Take a refreshing swim at Helnæsstrand and pay a visit to the Stone Age megalithic tombs. At Svanninge you will meet the foothills of the Fyn Alps, whose hills offer a magnificent view over the south of Funen. On the way, a stop in Fåborg is worthwhile. From the bell tower, the landmark of the city, you have a wonderful view of the surroundings and the sea. You will spend the night in the harbor town of Svendborg, whose cityscape is characterized by countless half-timbered houses and the Sejlskibsbroen at the harbor, or in the small shipping town of Troense on the island of Tåsinge.
You will take the ferry across to the picturesque island of Ærø. The oldest town on the island, Ærøskøbing, is your first destination. The fairytale town presents itself with small half-timbered houses, climbing hollyhocks and dreamy pubs. Cycle to the southeastern tip of Ærø and visit the harbor town of Marstal with its interesting Søfartsmuseum and enjoy the view of the sea from the cliffs of Voderup Klint. In Søby, you will take a ferry ride to Fynshav on the island of Als. The long island with its cliffs, bays, fjords and beaches is very diverse. With Sønderborg you reach your destination for the day.
Before you set off for the last kilometers of your bike tour along the Lillebælt, it is worth taking a longer exploration tour through Sønderborg. Visit the Sønderborg Slot, which today houses a museum, and stroll through the small streets of the old town. Back on the bike, a swim break at Kollund beach is a good option along the way. After a few kilometers you return to Flensburg, the starting point of your trip.
