You enjoy cycling longer distances on your bike, but also like to spend time visiting the sights of the towns or stopping for a swim? Well, then you'll really like our active bike tour around Lake Constance. Cycling an average of 65 km a day you'll pedal round the lake and visit the towns of Konstanz, Stein am Rhein and Schaffhausen, as well as Meersburg, Friedrichshafen and Bregenz. Our luggage transport service means your cycling is as trouble-free as it can get and you can enjoy the lake dwellings, the Rhine Falls or the Pfänder mountain as well as the wonderful landscape around Lake Constance to the full.
You start your tour in Constance, Lake Constance’s biggest town. 600 years ago this was where the Council of Constance took place, the only council to elect a pope that was held north of the Alps. The Rhine leaves Lake Constance here: 0 kilometres on its way to the North Sea. Only a few minutes by foot from the medieval town centre is the Swiss town of Kreuzlingen with its lively harbour.
Your bike tour takes you out of Konstanz, off through picturesque Swiss fishing villages. Along the waterside, the path takes you to Stein am Rhein with its beautiful fresco-decorated, medieval houses. Switching several times between Germany and Switzerland you reach the canton's capital, Schaffhausen. The town, whose citizens competed in building numerous gables on their houses, is overlooked by Munot Fortress.
Following the Rhine upstream you cycle through Stein am Rhein and along the Höri peninsula to Gaienhofen. From the cycle path you have wonderful views over to the Reichenau island with its monastery and of the volcanic Hegau landscape. After you leave Radolfzell, you cross the so-called Bodanrück, a small range of hills, to arrive in Bodman. Soon you reach the former Imperial City of Überlingen.
Today's section of the route takes you towards Meersburg. You pass the elegant pilgrimage Birnau church, and the reconstructed lake dwellings in Uhldingen. Cycling through vineyards, you reach Friedrichshafen, home of the Zeppelin. The tour continues to the Bavarian town of Lindau, an island town. If you spend the night in Bregenz, you cycle around the Bregenz Bay with a view of the Alpine chain and quickly reach the stage destination.
The start of today’s tour will lead you through the Rhine delta, an important nature conservation area. Near Altenrhein you will cross over the border to Switzerland, where you will find the market hall; the last building of the artist Friedrich Hundertwasser. You will cycle to Constance mainly through orchards and the small towns of Arbon and Romanshorn.
