Where the tides determine the rhythm of life, the wind blows a little stronger and the tea tastes twice as good as anywhere else, you've come to the right place. Our bike tour on the East Frisian Islands takes you to the most north-westerly region of Germany. In eight days, it combines the maritime flair of the inland areas around Emden and Aurich, the rougher North Sea coast and the charm of the East Frisian Islands of Borkum, Norderney and Langeoog. Varied landscapes, the Wadden Sea, miles of sandy beaches, the Low German language and Frisian humor make our bike tour on the East Frisian Islands unique. Accompanied by the salty North Sea air, you cycle on easy cycle paths – ideal for first-time cyclists. Discover the odd lighthouse along the way, grey seals lolling on sandbanks and the ancestral homes of former chieftains who once ruled East Frisia. On our bike tour on the East Frisian Islands, fortify yourself with down-to-earth, hearty but also sweet East Frisian cuisine. In addition to Emdener Matjes, Greetsieler Krabben, Snirtjebraten and Prüllkes, there are many other delicacies in store for you.
Moin Moin in East Frisia! The seaport city of Emden, located at the mouth of the Ems, is the ideal place to start your bike tour on the East Frisian Islands. The city is the economic and cultural centre of East Frisia. Take a relaxing walk along the Wall, the former city fortifications. It runs in a semicircle around the city centre. A personal tour information will take place at your starting hotel in the late afternoon. If you have booked a rental bike, you will also receive it at this time.
The first stage of your bike tour on the East Frisian Islands takes you to the Island of Borkum. By ferry from Emden, you will reach the westernmost and largest of the East Frisian Islands. You are spoilt for choice with a 130-kilometre network of cycle paths. Whether you choose a longer tour around the island or a short tour including a stay on the beach, enjoy the unspoilt nature, the magnificent dune landscape and the unique views of the North Sea. The ferry will take you back to Emden.
With numerous wind turbines in view, you cycle along the Ems and the Wadden Sea to the Pilsum lighthouse. Painted red and yellow, it is one of East Frisia's best-known landmarks. The nearby town of Greetsiel is worth another stop. Picturesque East Frisian houses around the harbour and the Greetsiel twins, two Dutch windmills, characterise the townscape. In Norden, your final destination, you can get up close to seals and harbour seals. The seal station is part of the Waloseum. It deals with the life and behaviour of whales.
The third day of your bike tour on the East Frisian Islands begins with a ferry ride to the Island of Norderney. The island's landmark and emblem is the Kaap. It served as a sea mark before the lighthouse was built. It is easy to discover the island on around 26 kilometres of cycle path. The lively town of Norderney is reminiscent of the imperial era with its Biedermeier and classicist buildings. The north and east of the island impress with extensive salt marshes, dune landscapes and a 14-kilometre-long sandy beach. If you want to learn more about the bathing tradition of the North Sea spa, visit the bathing museum. The ferry takes you back to Norden.
You cycle leisurely along the North Sea coast to Bensersiel. Before you take the ferry to the island of Langeoog, make a detour to Dornum. The moated castle there and the Beningaburg are testimonies to the former chieftains who settled there and ruled over the region. On Langeoog, it's all about switching off and enjoying. The car-free island has a 14-kilometre-long white, fine-sand beach. The island's landmark is the water tower, built in 1909. The tower's viewing platform can be climbed and offers a magnificent view over the island and the North Sea.
You will spend today's day of your bike tour on the East Frisian Islands on Langeoog. Grab your bike and explore the island. Whether you decide to take a short tour around the village of Langeoog or cycle to the eastern tip of the island, enjoy the fresh sea air and the scent of the hedge roses and sea buckthorn bushes lining the cycle path. There is a seal-watching platform at the eastern tip of the island. With a bit of luck, you can watch seals and grey seals lying on the beach or making themselves comfortable on the nearby sandbanks.
You return to the mainland by ferry in Bensersiel. On the way, a longer stopover in Aurich is worthwhile. The former capital of East Frisia looks back on a history that can be traced back to the 13th century. You can gain an insight into the town's history and East Frisian culture at the Historical Museum. The museum was built from the stones of the demolished monastery in nearby Ihlow. Today, the former monastery rises as a partial construction made of steel and wood. It takes its visitors back to a time when the place of worship was one of the largest in Northern Germany. At the end of your bike tour on the East Frisian Islands, take a canal trip in Emden, which will show you the city from the water side.
