The first stage of your bike tour rom Bayreuth to Mainz takes you to the festival city of Bayreuth. Here you'll encounter a wealth of architectural, musical, and horticultural sights. After exploring the town, hop back on your bike and head south to the source of the Red Main. It is located about 10 kilometers from Bayreuth, near Creußen in the Lindenhardt Forest. After visiting this picturesque spot, you’ll cycle on to Kulmbach. In the evening, relax at one of the town's many restaurants and indulge in some traditional Franconian delicacies.
Leaving Kulmbach behind, you follow the Red Main for a few more kilometers until it meets the White Main to form the Main River. The route takes you through the scenic Franconian Forest and the Franconian Jura, offering plenty of opportunities for rest. A worthwhile stop is the baroque Vierzehnheiligen pilgrimage church near Bad Staffelstein, a stunning example of religious architecture. As you continue, the Main winds through a beautiful meadow landscape, with meandering river bends. You’ll soon reach Bamberg, a town renowned for its rich beer tradition and charming townscape, featuring numerous listed buildings that add to its historic allure.
Today’s ride takes you on a sporty journey along the Main Valley cycle path. You’ll start by following the Regnitz River, which soon joins the Main. As you ride, the landscape begins to shift—welcome to Weinfranken, the heart of Franconian wine country. The route takes you along the riverbanks, passing through picturesque vineyards, charming villages, and the expansive Hassberge Nature Park.
A worthwhile stop is the Dippach observation tower, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the largest gray heron colony in southern Germany. Continuing on, you’ll reach Schweinfurt via Zeil am Main and Haßfurt. Take a moment to explore this lively town before pressing on with renewed energy toward your stage destination, Volkach.
Today’s ride begins with a thrilling stretch along the Main loop. For a stunning aerial view of the riverbend, take a short break at Vogelsburg Castle—its panoramic vistas are sure to impress. Afterward, you'll cycle through Kitzingen and arrive at the charming half-timbered town of Ochsenfurt. Don’t linger too long, as a real highlight awaits you in Würzburg.
The city is packed with historical gems, including the majestic Marienberg Fortress and the opulent Würzburg Residence. Take time to explore these iconic sights before continuing your ride toward Karlstadt. Once there, visit the Karlsburg castle ruins on the opposite side of the Main, where you can enjoy a magnificent view of the surrounding area.
Your cycle tour continues along the Main Valley cycle path, taking you into the foothills of the Spessart. This region is known for its dense forests and gently rolling hills. A detour to the ruins of Scherenburg Castle, perched above the town center of Gemünden, offers a stunning view of the surrounding area.
Over the next two days, you’ll cycle through the Main quadrangle, a picturesque area defined by the towns of Gemünden, Wertheim, Miltenberg, and Aschaffenburg. The first stop on your route is Wertheim, located at the confluence of the Main and Tauber rivers. As you approach the town, you’ll be greeted by the impressive silhouette of Wertheim Castle, which stands high above the town, offering a perfect introduction to this charming destination.
As you follow the meandering course of the Main River, you’ll pass through numerous idyllic towns, picturesque castle ruins, and the gently rolling hills of the Spessart-Mainland. Be sure to plan a stop in Miltenberg, where you can enjoy a leisurely stroll through its charming half-timbered streets. The famous Schnatterloch, the town's market square, has served as a backdrop for many films thanks to its timeless beauty.
On your way, make a stop in Klingenberg to sample some local delights at one of the wine taverns or bakeries. From there, continue your journey toward Aschaffenburg, where the striking Johannisburg Castle will greet you from afar, marking your arrival in this historic town.
Today marks the final stretch of your journey along the Main Valley cycle path as you cross the border into Hesse. A stop in the charming town of Seligenstadt, with its picturesque half-timbered houses, is well worth the detour before continuing toward the bustling metropolis of Frankfurt am Main, passing through Hanau and Offenbach along the way.
Once you arrive in Frankfurt, you'll find a wealth of sights in the old town, not far from the Main River itself. As you near the end of your journey, take a moment to appreciate the vibrant city before heading to the state capital of Rhineland-Palatinate. To cap off your cycle tour, treat yourself to a glass of regional wine in one of the rustic wine bars, savoring the flavors of the region as you reflect on your adventure.
