The South-Western arm of Lake Constance is known here as Untersee, or Lower Lake. Many locals consider it to be the most beautiful part of the lake – not without reason: Your gentle bike Tour at Lake Constance leads you past timber-frame houses in medieval villages and along the Swiss and German banks of the Rhine, always with the volcanic hills of Hegau region in sight, to arrive at Europe‘s largest waterfall, the Rhine Falls. Hermann Hesse and Otto Dix were so fascinated by this countryside that they settled here for many years. The Lake Constance Cycle Path follows a calm and romantic route around the Lower Lake, in harmony with nature.
You start your bike tour in Constance, the largest city on Lake Constance. 600 years ago, it was the scene of a church council and the only papal election north of the Alps. The Rhine flows out of Lake Constance here: kilometer 0 on its way to the North Sea. A few minutes' walk from the medieval old town is the Swiss town of Kreuzlingen with its lively harbor.
Today you cycle along the southern Swiss shore of Lake Constance to Stein am Rhein. Along the route of the gentle bike tour at Lake Constance you will come across Castle Arenenberg and the monastery island of Werd, before cycling through picturesque fishing villages such as Gottlieben and Steckborn. Fresco-adorned half-timbered buildings and narrow alleys await you in Stein am Rhein. After an extensive tour of the town follow the Rhine, which has now left Lake Constance, to Gailingen.
Today you stay on the north bank of the Rhine and follow the course of the river to Schaffhausen. The Rhine Falls are not far and you can get up close to it on a boat tour. Castle Laufen thrones high above the waterfall and from the viewing platform you have a breath-taking view of the surroundings. You return to Gailingen in the late afternoon.
The section today takes you via Stein am Rhein to the Höri peninsula. You'll need to pedal pretty fiercely before you can get back to concentrating on just how pretty the countryside is here ‒ which particularly inspired Hermann Hesse. Along the route you have numerous opportunities to go for a dip in the lake or take a break in any of the many local beer gardens..
Over Bodanrück Peninsula you cycle to Bodman-Ludwigshafen. On the Lake Constance Cycle Route you continue to Überlingen with its famous lakeside promenade. Passing the baroque pilgrimage church of Birnau, you will go to Uhldingen, where there is a pile dwelling village. In Meersburg, the impressive centuries-old castle awaits you. The ferry will take you across the lake back to Constance.
