Opposites attract! This could be the motto of this trip by bike and boat from Rotterdam to the province of Zeeland. Cool, trendy and hip are attributes with which the vibrant metropolis of Rotterdam is often described. Since the trip starts and ends there, you will have ample time to get to know the many faces of the city not far from the mouth of the Rhine and North Sea. Leave the modern skyline behind and explore the west of the Netherlands on the daily bike tours. Here, the beautiful nature, the scent of the sea and the species-rich flora and fauna will impress you. Historic cities like Dordrecht, Middelburg and Willemstad are on the way. Visit the Thick Tower in Zierikzee and the windmills of Kinderdijk on your trip by bike and boat in Zeeland. Very impressive on your trip by bike and ship through Zeeland are also the Delta Works – the world‘s largest protection system against storm surges and floods. In addition to all these highlights, enjoyment should not be neglected. Do not miss to try delicious mussels, oysters or the Oosterschelde lobster.
Welcome to your tour by bike and boat in Zeeland! An early arrival in Rotterdam is worthwhile. Take your time to get to know the city before embarking at 16:00. Discover the multifaceted and modern port city on a stroll. At 6 p.m. it's time to set sail! The MS Normandie will take you to Dordrecht, Holland's oldest city, in the evening.
The day gets off to a leisurely start as you first sail to Willemstad. The small fortress town impresses with its well-restored buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries. After a short tour, you get on your bike for the first time. You cross the Volkerakdam and cycle past green fields and through tranquil villages until you reach your stage destination of Hellevoetsluis.
Do you fancy a refreshing dip in the sea? Then it's worth making a detour to the wide, sandy beach in Rockanje before you set off on today's stage of your journey by bike and boat in Zeeland. Via the Harlingvliet, an inland waterway, you reach the island of Goeree-Overflakkee, which you cycle to at a leisurely pace. After crossing the Grevelingendam, you have reached your destination for the day, Bruinisse. The fishing village is a popular vacation destination and is particularly known for its mussel farming.
The small town of Zierikzee, one of the most beautiful monument towns in the Netherlands, is on your route today. Visit the Thick Tower - a remnant of the former cathedral - whose top platform can be reached via 279 steps. The effort is worth it! From the top, you have a wonderful view of the town, the landscape and the Zeeland Bridge. Cross the bridge to reach the Walcheren peninsula and your destination for the day, Veere, with virtually no ascent.
Today you will get to know the island of Neeltje Jans, which was artificially created during the construction of the Oosterschelde barrier, on a round trip. Visit the Deltapark and take a closer look at the Oosterschelde barrier. The facility is nine kilometers long and protects the province of Zeeland from storm surges and flooding. You then cycle back to Veere at a leisurely pace not far from the sea.
You can explore the Walcheren peninsula further today on a bike tour. Visit Middelburg, the capital of Zeeland. The fact that Middelburg was once a trading town can still be seen in many places today. The Stadhuis, which is considered one of the most beautiful Gothic buildings in the Netherlands, is particularly worth seeing. From the Langen Jan, the tower of a former abbey, you have a wonderful view of the city. You return to Veere through the picturesque countryside. Your ship leaves the town in the evening and arrives in Dordrecht at night.
The last stage of your journey by bike and boat in Zeeland lies ahead of you. You cycle relaxed through numerous meadows and fields. On the way, you will pass what are probably the most famous windmills in the Netherlands - 19 in total - in Kinderdijk. They date back to the 18th century. The landscape soon changes and it becomes more urban. Before your last night on the ship in Rotterdam, you can take a boat tour of the port. Modern architecture and huge container ships characterize the image of Europe's largest port.
