Hopfen und Malz – Gott erhalt‘s! (May God protect Hops and Malt). The Hallertau region in Lower and Upper Bavaria is the largest continuous hop-growing region in the world making it the perfect setting for our Bavarian hop bike tour. Enjoy adventurous days of cycling along the banks of the Danube, Isar and Abens. Cultural highlights include the Upper Palatinate capital city of Regensburg, Landshut with its famous gothic Old Town and the cathedral town of Freising. A certain level of basic fitness is an advantage on the Bavarian Hop Tour.
Welcome to Germany’s best-preserved city, which can look back on over 2000 years of history. The cathedral, the Salzstadel and the stone bridge form Regensburg’s medieval heart. In 2006, its historic centre was pronounced a UNESCO world heritage site. Why not stroll through the Spital Quarter or visit one of the many theatres. Reserved rental bikes are waiting for you at the hotel.
We can recommend taking your first break in Walhalla, close to Donaustauf. The route then takes you on along the Danube to Castle Wörth. From here you can look over the Gäuboden, or Bavaria's granary and one of the largest loess regions in South Germany. Today’s section ends in the old city of Straubing, which looks back on Celtic and Roman roots. The town’s striking tower is this small town’s land mark.
Today you follow along the Danube until you arrive at the medieval town of Bogen. Its expansive market square which is lined with picturesque houses. Your Bavarian hop bike tour then continues on towards the oldest place of pilgrimage in Bavaria, the church of the Assumption on hill Bogenberg. Cycling onwards along the banks of the Danube and Isar your reach Plattling.
You pedal along the banks of the Isar to Dingolfing with its reservoir. Visit the landmark building of the town, the three-naved Church of St. Johann. You then cycle through hop-fields to your destination for the day, Landshut with its unique gothic town centre. Elisabeth of Bavaria, the Queen of the Holy Roman Empire was born in Trausnitz Castle. The local Church of St. Martin has the highest redbrick tower in the world.
The Isar accompanies you towards beautiful Moosburg. The church towers of the Castulus Cathedral and the Church of St. Johann, which can be seen from afar, give the impression of a cathedral city rather than a busy small town. The real cathedral awaits however in Freising and cannot be missed – the Romanesque building of St. Maria and St. Corbinian which was completed in 1159 sits atop a mountain with its impressive 56 m high towers.
Today you cycle in the direction of Abensberg and leave the Isar Valley following along the Abens, a small tributary of the Danube. En route you should take a stop to visit the German Hop Museum in Wolnzach to learn a little more about the history of hop-growing in the Hallertau Region. Abensberg impresses visitors with its beautiful location between the Danube and Altmühl Valleys and the Hallertau Region, and also boasts a Bird Park and an enormous flint stone mine which can both be visited.
Today you first cycle to Weltenburg on the Danube, where you shouldn’t miss a visit to the Monastery of the same name in the beautiful location just above the Danube Gorge. You have a relaxing boat trip through the Danube Gorge to Kelheim. Here the impressive Liberation Hall commemorates the battle victory against Napoleon. You then continue on by bicycle to Regensburg. Reminisce about your Bavarian Hop Bike Tour here over a wheat beer and a Bavarian veal sausage (Weißwurst).
