On our tour along the Baltic Sea Cycle Path in Jutland the ocean is never far away. Cycling along the fjords, at the Little Belt or along the coastline of the southern Kattegat, you will enjoy a maritime holiday feeling. Go and explore old harbor towns which became wealthy through seafaring, enjoy the moderate Baltic Sea climate and the wide green landscapes with rich forests. Our tour along the Baltic Sea Cycle Path in Jutland starts in Flensburg near the Danish Border and goes further north along the Flensburg Fjord. On your way you´ll make a short detour to the island of Als where you´ll learn more about the German-Danish history in Dybbol. Go and explore the impressive Haderslev Cathedral and step up the Kaempetarn Tower. With a little luck, you may catch sight of porpoise in the Little Belt around Middelfart on the island of Funen. Your destination Aarhus – Denmark´s second largest town – comes up with a huge variety of sights. By the way, don´t forget your swim gear during the tour along Baltic Sea Cycle Path in Jutland! You will find countless beaches for either swimming or sunbathing.
Flensburg, Germany's northernmost port city, is the starting point for your journey on the Baltic Sea Cycle Path in Jutland. The city on the Flensburg Fjord looks back on a history of over 750 years. Part of this history is the trade in rum from the Caribbean, which helped Flensburg to prosperity in the 19th century. One of the town's landmarks is the Nordertor. It is the last surviving city gate in Flensburg.
The first leg on your tour on the Baltic Sea Cycle Path in Jutland leads you along the Flensburg Fjord. You should allow for a short break at the Royal Family´s summer residence in Grasten. The castle and the beautiful park are definitely worth a visit. Just a stone´s throw away, the Historiecenter Dybbol Banke reminds of the German-Danish war in 1864. In Sønderborg, whose old town is on the island of Als, you should visit Sønderborg Slot which today is a museum.
On the Østkystruten, the Baltic Sea Cycle Path, you cycle in a relaxed manner through forests and wide fields over the Sundewitt peninsula. A first stop is worthwhile at Sandbjerg Castle directly on the Als Sound. It is considered one of the most elegant palaces in South Jutland. Let's move on! On the way, you will pass Nydam Mose, a bog that served as a sacrificial site in the Iron Age. Your destination for the day, Åbenrå, impresses with a picturesque ensemble of town houses and craftsmen's houses. Our tip: If you like, you can also cycle a few kilometres from Sønderborg to the charming island of Als and get to know it better.
Today´s section on the Baltic Sea Cycle Path in Jutland leads you north. On the way, the impressive Vor Frue Domkirke, Haderslever Cathedral, catches your eye from afar. It is one of the most beautiful churches in Denmark and is located in the middle of Haderslev's old town. Swap your bike for a boat and take a round trip on Haderslev Dam. In Haderslev, decide whether you want to cycle directly or along the Little Belt to Christiansfeld. Christiansfeld, which is still a young town, was founded about 250 years ago. Designed on the drawing board, the aim was to build the ideal town.
Before leaving Christiansfeld, you should try the city´s local speciality, the honey cake. Its recipe is almost as old as the city itself. As yesterday, you can reach today´s destination, Kolding, directly or via the Little Belt. Upon arrival, the Koldinghus will catch your eye, and from the tower of the castle you have a wonderful view over the city and the Kolding Fjord. Further you cycle to Middelfart on the island of Funen. One of Denmark's most beautiful half-timbered houses, Henner Friisers Hus, can be found not far from the old harbour. With a little bit of luck, you may spot a porpoise on a boat tour over there.
In Middelfart, you cross the Little Belt to reach Fredericia. The centre of the town is laid out in a chequerboard pattern. It is surrounded by a historic rampart, where old cannons and guard buildings can be seen. The landmark of your day's destination Vejle is a windmill situated on a hill within the town. It is visible from many places in the town and houses a museum of the mill's history. Strolling along the harbour, you will be impressed by the modern and wave-shaped Bølgen housing complex.
With the bridge over Vejle Fjord in view, today's stage of your journey on the Baltic Sea Cycle Path in Jutland first takes you along the coast. Follow the partly hilly and forest-lined cycle path inland to Horsens. Visit the former state prison. The area, which has been converted into a museum, provides exciting insights into the history and everyday life of the prison. The town's most famous son is Vitus Bering. In the 18th century he sailed the Bering Strait, named after him, between Asia and America. A park near the station commemorates him.
Nearly without any ascent, you are pedaling near the coast along Horsens Fjord. From Hou, a small harbour town, you cycle further north. Along the way you will enjoy the glittering Baltic Sea, the fresh breeze and sunny moments on the long streched beaches. You will spend the night in Norsminde or Odder. In Norsminde, it is worth taking an evening stroll along the Norsminde Fjord and to the small harbour. Discover the Odder Sognekirke on a walk through Odder. It is one of the oldest churches in Denmark and immediately catches the eye with its whitewashed facade.
The length of the last stage of your journey on the Baltic Sea Cycle Path in Jutland is deliberately kept short. Sun worshippers and bathing beauties have numerous opportunities to take longer breaks on the beach on the way to Aarhus. Refreshed, you reach Aarhus. Denmark's second largest city impresses with a multitude of remarkable sights, a first-class restaurant scene and a lively cultural scene, as well as its friendly, relaxed atmosphere.
