Your first kilometres on this Baltic Coast bike tour will be along the Kieler Förde. The bustle of Kiel harbour will follow you for a few kilometres until you reach the impressive locks of the Kiel Canal, the most-frequented artificial stretch of water in the world. Romantic bays, conservation areas home to grey geese and swans and the typical kinks in Holstein’s landscape await between Schönberg and Heiligenhafen. You will be able to enjoy breath-taking views of Lübeck bay from Dahme lighthouse. In Lübeck, you will find the Marzipan capital of the world, the Holsten gate and Thomas Mann’s home.
Harbours, shipyards, ships – Everything in Kiel revolves around shipping and the Baltic Sea. Almost completely destroyed in the war, the city today is modern and contemporary. The Maritime Museum, the city gallery and the art gallery are worth seeing. Good bathing beaches can be reached quickly.
You are now leaving Schleswig-Holstein’s state capital, cycling along the Kieler Förde. Watch all the commotion as huge ships enter the North Sea ‒ Baltic Sea canal’s muzzle. You will cross the Fjord on a boat and reach Laboe, which has one of the most beautiful harbour of the Kieler Förde. Follow the Baltic Sea cycle path, visit lovely villages like Kalifornien and Brasilien, then you arrive in Schönberg.
Today you will cycle long distances directly along the coast, with some short detours into the hinterland. In Hohwacht, a popular holiday destination, soft sandy beaches await you. It is rumoured that the hiding place of the famous pirate Klaus Störtebecker was located in this area. You will reach Heiligenhafen by cycling via Oldenburg and its impressive harbour.
Today you will cycle along the Baltic Sea Cycle Route to the famous seaside resort Grömitz with its 400 metre long pier. From here you will have a great view of the 8 kilometre long sandy beach and the Bay of Lübeck. The journey continues to your destination Neustadt, which has a charming historical town centre and an unusual granary.
The stage takes you along the bays of Neustadt and Lubeck. Famous seaside resorts such as Timmendorfer Strand and Travemünde lie on your way. Upon arriving in the old Hanseatic city Lubeck, a stroll through the historical city centre is recommended. It was declared world heritage by the UNESCO. Holstentor, salt warehouses or the Buddenbrookhaus are only some of the places which are worth visiting.
Your Baltic Coast bike tour ends after breakfast. If you wish we can extend your stay.
