Embark on an extensive and varied journey of discovery on two wheels: Follow the Alpe Adria Cycle Path from the Austrian Alps to the Mediterranean Sea. You won‘t be able to stop marvelling at the countless impressions. Right at the beginning of the Alpe Adria Cycle Path, the first highlight awaits you with the Mozart city of Salzburg. Cycle off and discover rugged mountain ranges and wide valleys along numerous rivers. Every effort is immediately followed by the reward of breathtaking views and idyllic villages and towns, such as Bad Gastein. Relax your legs on rapid descents past rushing waterfalls and crystal-clear lakes. Let yourself be infected by the Austrian cosiness and the lively sociability of the Italians. Enjoy delicacies from the cuisine, which is characterised by the most diverse influences. Now only one thing is missing: the sea! Can you imagine a better end to your cycling tour on the Alpe Adria Cycle Route?
Plan an early arrival to the world-famous Mozart city of Salzburg. Numerous historical and cultural sights such as Mirabell and Hellbrunn castles and Getreidegasse with Mozart's birthplace await you. We recommend a visit to the Hohensalzburg Fortress, which towers high above the city. Enjoy the wonderful view of the baroque old town from there.
On we go in the direction of the south. Grab your bike right after breakfast and follow the Salzach upstream. Through shady meadows, you'll roll leisurely to Hallein, where you'll explore the oldest salt show mine in the world. Would you rather go to lofty heights than to the depths of a mine? Then take a short hike from Golling to the waterfall of the same name - a natural spectacle in impressive surroundings.
You'll get over the moderate climb to Pass Lueg right at the start. You will be rewarded with a magnificent view of the Tennengebirge. The Salzach valley narrows here and you pass the Salzachklamm gorge. To the right and left of the path, the over 1000 meter high rock walls rise into the air. The route continues to Bischofshofen. On Epiphany Day, the final jump of the Four Hills Tournament takes place every year at the ski jumping hill. A few kilometers from today's overnight stop is the famous Liechtensteinklamm.
Today the first crisp climb to Oberuntersberg through the wild and romantic Gastein valley awaits you. Once you arrive in the cozy spa town of Bad Gastein, the meters of altitude in your legs are almost forgotten, because warm hospitality and the breathtaking nature of the mountains await you. Would you prefer to take it a little easier? Then take the train from St. Johann to Bad Hofgastein and save yourself some ascents. No matter which means of transport you used to get to Böckstein: Here you change to the train rush in just 10 minutes through the Tauernschleuse to the south side of the main Alpine ridge to Mallnitz in the Mölltal.
Due to construction work, the Tauern lock is expected to be out of service until 04.07.2025. The itinerary will be adjusted during this period. You will spend the night in the Gastein Valley instead of the Möll Valley and will be transferred to Spittal.
In the saddle, a leisurely ride awaits you in the Mölltal valley through an impressive high-mountain landscape. Soon you will reach the Drava River in the village of Möllbrücke and thus the sunny south of Austria. Leisurely cycle through idyllic villages and enjoy the breathtaking nature. In Spittal an der Drau, visit Porcia Castle, one of the most important Renaissance buildings north of the Alps.
This cycling stage you start framed by the imposing mountains of the Carinthian Alps. You cycle along a dike with wonderful panoramic views of the surrounding villages. Over bridges and small footbridges the Alpe-Adria cycle path leads you to Villach. Enchanting nature, grazing cows and many inviting resting places make your bike tour a pure joy! You might think the valley is making way for you. Shortly before Villach, the valley widens and the mountains recede into the background. Villach, the second largest city in Carinthia, awaits you. The Dobratsch is the local mountain, it is also called the mountain of butterflies, as it is home to up to 1300 different species of butterflies.
Today you leave Austria behind and welcome Italy. The first part, a strenuous climb, you bridge comfortably by train. Before you swing on your bike in Tarvis, stay a little longer in this traditional town. Different languages, cultures and culinary diversity of different cuisines meet here. Pedaling leisurely, you will cycle through the tranquil Canal Valley on the Alpe Adria Cycle Path. The narrow valley impresses with a beautiful panorama of the surrounding forested mountains.
Today's stage of the Alpe Adria Cycle Route begins at the foothills of the Julian Alps. It is worth taking a short detour to Gemona. The small historic town was lovingly rebuilt after an earthquake. The columns of the cathedral have been leaning since the quake, but that only makes visiting the town's landmark more interesting. Swing back into the saddle and marvel at the view that awaits you. You leave the rugged mountain ranges behind and follow the path, which is now lined with vines.
Stroll through Udine and let yourself be infected by the conviviality of its inhabitants. Visit the Venetian buildings and stop at a typical wine bar for a tasting of the local grape varieties. You will cycle through wide reed landscapes and along small waterfalls. Soon the salty scent of the sea wafts around your nose, a sign that the destination of your journey on the Alpe Adria Cycle Path is not far away. The former fishing town of Grado lies in a lagoon, surrounded by wonderful flora and fauna.
